How disheartening.
Oct. 23rd, 2004 03:58 amSo Reeve over at The Mega Man Network comes up with this idea for us to help do our part to support the charity known as Child's Play, hosted by famous internet comic Penny Arcade.
The gist of it, for those who didn't click, is that we at The Mega Man Network would gather together as many prizes as we could for a collective pot, made up of donations from various companies. We've gotten word from companies such as Artbox(trading cards), Jazwares(non-NT toys), Lolly Togs(NT t-shirts and sleepwear), and Viz(some sampler manga and maybe some sampler DVDs). M Sipher was interested in getting some MM player's guides from Bradygames to contribute as well.
In fact, I even gave m'man Patrick Spaziante a buzz, and he was willing to donate one of his original art pieces, autographed, that he used to help make Artbox's card set, to the jackpot for the contest.
We'd ask people to donate, with all money going towards Child's Play. For every five dollars one put towards the charity, that would be one entry into the drawing. So 20 dollars = 4 entries. 100 dollars = 20 entries. And so on.
Unfortunately, it seems that we have met with a great deal of resistance along the way. It seems that many companies are not very charitable.
I spoke with a Capcom service representative about getting some Mega Man games or whatever they can thrown in. Naturally, it's not his decision to make, so he passed it on to the person whose decision it WAS to make... and haven't heard anything.
Viz... Viz is a bit better. Apparently, they aren't allowed to donate actual graphic novels, just samplers with 1 chapter each of several titles, probably something you could get free anyway at some shops or events, I'd imagine. Also, she(my contact) said that she might be able to get some sampler DVDs with MegaMan NT Warrior vol. 1's first two episodes.
All in all, better than nothing.
I've heard nothing from Dreamwave; I wanted to get a copy of the Mega Man Pocket Book added. Spoke to another contact, who as I understand was going to speak with them about it, but I've heard nothing since.
Top Heavy Clothing, Franco Manufacturing, Disguise Inc, and Mattel, all licensers of MegaMan NT Warrior products, never replied to me. Thermos LLC and Hanes, also licensers did, but to their credit, their product won't be ready til perhaps next year, so they've nothing to donate. But at least they replied to me.
Decipher, who makes the MegaMan Trading Card Game(not to be confused with Artbox's simple trading cards), did reply to MMN owner Tim. Get this... they can donate product for a contest, as they did, but not for this. That is pretty much what I was told.
So all in all, slim pickings due to cheap companies, for a chunk of it. Or simply disappointing.
All in all, what perhaps hurts the most in this is that we have not heard word one about this from the men themselves, Gabe and Tycho.
I don't know what the deal is. Tycho, I only wrote to on the 20th, so maybe he's not had time to reply; he's been pretty good about conversing with me by e-mail in the past. Gabe, Reeve tried to contact him probably over a week ago in the hopes of finding out any info or advice we could get, or if we should just call it off due to the slim pickings. We also hoped Gabe would be willing to add his own art to the pot, maybe a neat Mega Man piece done in his style. But we've not heard word one from either one of them, nor any remote mention in their newsposts about this, though they have mentioned a few other efforts similar...
It's really too bad. The idea was to get a grand jackpot full of prizes to encourage people to donate, so that the sum of the donations would far outweigh the cost of the product to those contributing, and far outweigh the value of the contribution of the products themselves to the charity. And to perhaps rally some support from the Mega Man community for this, and maybe PA as well.
Instead... everything seems to have fallen apart before we could really even get started.
It's too bad, really... I guess if we don't hear back soon, I should tell those who DID offer to contribute that it's off.

Date: 2004-10-23 10:06 am (UTC)You'd think Viz, Capcom, Dreamwave, ect, are doing well enough where they can lose 50-60 dollars on a donated game or two or some deck sets or a whole bunch of graphic novels for the cause and it wouldn't hurt them. I mean, they ARE multi-million dollar companies.....
If there's anything I can do to further assist, lemme know.. I know I'm a sucky artist but I guess I could draw, tho' I'm no Gabe or M.Sipher. o_o;;; Or just spread the word myself..? I dunno.. I'll hunt around and see if I can find some cheap MM stuff.. I got a check for 800 for being rear-ended recently, I can definatly pick up 50 bucks worth of MM stuff and it won' hurt me..... And we have TONS of the new Jazwares toys runnin' 'round...

Date: 2004-10-23 01:09 pm (UTC)...but remember, it probably doesn't cost them quite as much to make some of this stuff as it does for us to buy it, which IMO makes it all the worse.
