Oct. 23rd, 2004 03:06 amYes, I am enjoying Command Mission very much, thank you.
I've only just started Chapter 4, but this game is providing more or less stuff I like out of Mega Man X right now. Foremost, it's giving me a setting that's NOT just "shoot everything." It's giving me character interaction with voices that are better than what we've been getting. And it's giving me a story that doesn't involve Sigma dropping the sky on our head.
Just a good ol' fashioned Reploid rebellion, just like in the good ol' days, before viruses and crap.
A few small things bother me, however. One is the lack of humans. So the humans were all kicked off the island by the Rebellion. I laugh at how convenient that is, considering we haven't seen a living, breathing human in about 5 or 6 games, counting GBs(can't remember for the first GB game).
Another is, while I really enjoy seeing how things are in the world of MMX, the fact that it seems to be a recently created city in the year 22XX(well after the current batch of other X games), it feels somewhat detached. It's like, I'm seeing stuff, but don't know how much is different from the "present" part of the timeline. So it sort of brings up the question of what are we actually seeing? Does this city reflect the cities and communities of 21XX?
Anyway, not too much bothers me here, because as far as I'm concerned and can tell, I seem to have a similar vibe to what they're usually thinking on this stuff... and besides, 9 times out of 10, Capcom's best games come at the number "2."
I think this was just a low-key effort to test the waters, to see what reaction would be to a product like this. So they put in a moderate effort without running up a huge budget at Capcom HQ, and produce a decent game that many fans are eating up and is receiving a moderately decent score from most video gaming publications.
So maybe now is where they pull out the big guns. They put more effort into the big #2 and expand the scope, just as they did in Mega Man 2, Street Fighter 2, Resident Evil 2, Mega Man Legends 2, Mega Man Zero 2, Mega Man Battle Network 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Mega Man Xtreme 2, MM2 GB, and more.
Not that it's ALWAYS a success. Mega Man X2 and Devil May Cry 2 spring to mind offhand as being more like cash-ins than real efforts. But two out of eleven isn't really bad.
Unfortunately, this brings to me the question... when should the next one take place? While I'd like to see more of the "modern" MMX world, I do really like the characters I've met so far in CM, and X's 22XX look. I'd really hate to see that go away.

j00!!!
Date: 2004-10-23 10:29 am (UTC)Anyhow.. I agree, I do like X's new look. I think Capcom did this to make him fit in more. I mean, look and Zero even. He's ALWAYS been more decorative.. I mean, like, the gold markings on his armor, and he's Red, white, black, AND Gray, and gold. And then green too! .. And of course the blue eyes and blue helmet jewel.. X is .. just more BLAH when you stick him next to Axl and Zero. Then again he's the first Reploid thus oldest thus old fashioned and probably isn't up into current Reploid fashion.... XP But this is why I think Capcom jazzed him up for CM. (I <3 the scarf)
There will always be a place in my heart for classic X. But this new verzion of X rocks too. :)
As far as the ratings.. I'm a bit miffed at the game magazines, but I'm glad they're at least giving it an honest score.. PSX gaming gave it a 3 and a half outta 5, and IGN and Gamespot both gave it 8s.. I can't complain. I mean, it's not Final Fantasy, it's not going to be. But I mean, there's definatly LOTS to do.. I think on my game, Nana is about ready to clock X over the head with a mechanicloid if he doesn't STFU about those damn deployment teams. XD;;;
I'm not surprised Capcom stole so much from other games. We have the Data thing (like "X's level is above level 30!! You get 'support mech sketch'!!") and the figureines, both of which where blantantly raped straight out of SSB:Melee... But that's fine cause I think the figures where my favorite part in Melee.. So now along with all my Samus figures on Melee I can have my X ones on CM. Yup. Squee.
I love the sketches. (Flying Version X sketch fucking RULES. I mean, crossbreed between Harvey Birdman and Captain Falcon, HELLO.) I love the data. I love the posters. XD;;;;
I gotta agree with you, it's nice to have a game that DOESN'T involve Sigma. Which kinda goes against my prior thoughts that if there was ever a MMX game WITHOUT Sigma it simply WASN'T MMX. So yah. Nice. Capcom pulls it off well. Tho I'm a bit sad that one of the better characters ends up being such a waste..
And as far as MMXtreme1, no humans there either. I think the last time we actually saw a HUMAN BEING in a Mega Man X game was X3. And that was Dr. Cain. It would be nice to just see a few human refugees running around with the reploids. Just to let us know they're still there. I mean, a human boy or girl playing with those reploid kids, that would be nice.
All in all, my thought stands at this: I wouldn't be upset at all if Capcom converted the entire X series to strictly RPG. There's certaintly enough storyline for it, and I think the characters are more thought-out and deeper than any other MM series out there. .. I mean, when my lil' sister, whom has married a game elitist who only plays games like GTA3 and Socom, and Sam actually says "I'll tell ya, Aub, this is the coolest Mega Man game I've seen!" That says something. (altho Kevin continues to bash it.. but that's cause it's Mega Man and MM isn't 'cool'. :P) That means Capcom hit their mark, and I'm gonna pray every day that MMX:CM2 is announced soon.

Date: 2004-10-23 05:39 pm (UTC)However, one negative thing does come to mind. This is by far not the first time Capcom has made a game in a long-running series that complies dives into a new area of play. However, they only tend to do this once for each concept. We've never seen a second boardgame, soccer game, racing game or interactive story game. You might consider the GB series to be an exception, although those don't deviate very much from their founding series. Now, the only thing that might contradict this is that Kitabayashi comes from a background with RPGs. If he feels CM went well, another would be profitable, and has some good idea for it (perhaps with Keiji's help), then I say, why not?

Date: 2004-10-24 02:51 am (UTC)Indeed, though I feel MM2GB was an improvement largely because I could actually play it without the aggravation of the first. Not to mention, didn't it have more stages than the first? I thought the first had four stages, then Dr. Wily with a 4-RM boss battle against 4 other bosses, but without stages, following a teleporter hatch layout.
As for story... what was the first GB game's story? I really don't remember it having much more than what was implied in the title, and Enker.

Indeed. I feel that the strongest argument against the "never done more than one of a different type" deal is that it happened under Inafune's rule, and this is a new team.
Besides, CM seems well-received on the whole... were the others?
The Kitabayashi background is another plus to that, as well.

Date: 2004-10-24 07:39 am (UTC)Yes, as the subtitle implies, the game is mostly abotu Wily drawing out MegaMan so he could destroy him, and Enker was created specifically for that purpose. A bit bland I'll remark, but I still think it's better than essentially creating a green and yellow ProtoMan, giving him a pogo-jack hammer, and saying he's MegaMan from the future.The additional stages are nice as well, but I think that's about all MM2 GB has going for it. It';s just.. strange.
