Aug. 26th, 2008 02:24 amKnow what leads to piracy?
Going to iTunes, and not finding a song.
Then going to Amazon.com, finding the song (for 89 cents), going to purchase the song, and being told:
"We are sorry... We could not process your order. The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you."
Then going to Amazon.ca, who I'm not even sure has MP3 downloads, and guess what? Not finding the song, just as I expected.
That's not to say I've pirated the song, but at this point, are there any other legal channels which I can peruse?
Wait, just thought of one... hang on a second.
...ok, I thought I heard Yahoo had a music store, but I guess not. If they do, I can't seem to find the actual "store" part of it.
This would be one reason people would turn to piracy.
Edit: Red found it (Rock Out by Motorhead) for me on iTunes, albeit marked as a "clean" version. :P No explicit available, but I don't know the difference offhand, only first hearing some of it last night. We'll find out if I can listen to it on WinAmp later...

Date: 2008-08-26 04:25 pm (UTC)"Rock Out" by Motorhead, and I don't want to drop 14 bucks for an album that I really only want one song from right now. Not to mention that I'd rather have it in MP3 format.

Date: 2008-08-26 04:57 pm (UTC)You probably already had a way of getting it for free, so this may be useless, but in case your options are totally exhausted and you didn't already....

Something tells me that if I couldn't find what I was looking for, then others likely would have the same problem. That can't be good for iTunes' business. Not to say they're hurting, but maybe they could stand to do better.

Date: 2008-08-26 04:37 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's an excuse. I do buy albums from more independent bands, but I usually end up buying those at concerts as well.
Once the price point for music is moved, the whole industry will be changed. The delivery system is going to be different ten years from now, and I want to be there when it happens.

Date: 2008-08-27 02:09 am (UTC)I bet it happens a lot in Australia/NZ and Europe, since it can take months or even years for things to finally get here, if at all. Sorry, I'll watch the episodes on youtube and buy the boxset when they release it in 2015.

Date: 2008-08-27 03:54 am (UTC)Then came my hard drive crashing, and learning that nope, you can't redownload things to an iTunes account! We'll keep TRACK of what you have, but it'll be another $1 per for each of those songs, thanks. Add to this the fact that some of the already-mentioned exclusive tracks had since been pulled from the service, and it turned into "fuck it" pretty fast.
I still totally buy CDs, though. Just less frequently with the current cash flow issue.
