Looking better...
Aug. 7th, 2003 01:00 amMegaMan #1 preview.
I suppose the preview looks a little better than what I've been expecting. The writing will be the true deciding factor, though. I've had my share of comics with subpar art that I can deal, though I'm still saddened that the MegaMan art doesn't seem as close to Capcom's as the other DW/Capcom stuff does.

Date: 2003-08-07 03:30 pm (UTC)Hey, i look at it this way, the art could be worse. it's pretty close I think but that's me. I was wondering how they were gunna pull off this "every day kid" thing with the fallig for girl BS that we get in every stereo typical plot. However, i htink Mega disserved more of a transformation scene. ^_^ I'm also happy to see Roll in a couple of pictures. As one of my favorite characters i would have been saddened if she wasn't featured. I am hoping that the storyline carries more meat than what others have put out. However, i'm not dissapointed so far. I look forward to the sibling rivaly that i got a glimps of.
uh..

Date: 2003-08-08 12:15 am (UTC)My gripes are chiefly with what they're doing with the story, though. The Mighty Morphin' Wristwatch, I don't mind; I might've had the same idea myself once before I realized MegaMan wouldn't necessarily need something like that.
The flying and possible confusion of MegaMan with Duo in the beginning of MegaMan 8, though, along with perhaps one of the most cliche'd story ideas to come along... that bothers me a bit.
And I know that MegaMan was built on Astroboy ideas and American superhero stereotypes, but I think that over his fifteen years, he's evolved beyond that into an established identity of his own, and he doesn't need to borrow something like the "undercover hero in school" bit.
The art, it's hit and miss for me. The one bit where he morphs, I actually like that. The cover of issue 2 where it looks like he has no hand, not so much. I'm not big on him seeming to often have an enjoyment of destruction and action, though that seems to be getting toned down. And I really don't much care for the idea of MegaMan blowing up Bonne-styled aircraft, even if DW does go with the plan of all the series happening at the same time. Save it for a crossover, at least.
Not sure if I care much for the reasoning of giving Rock brown hair, either. "Because it's more interesting" doesn't suit me as well as the fact that his color has become sort of ambiguous, thanks to Marvel Vs. Capcom and the old Ruby-Spears toon.
Another plus on the art: MegaMan no longer has green eyes. I could deal with it on Ariga's art, since his manga is black and white, and so the green was generally reserved for the covers.
It's all over the place, IMO. Oh, and somehow, I can't quite explain it, but the Buster just hasn't quite looked right to me. Oh well, not a major concern.
