Dammit all.

I've been without a wristwatch for years, waiting for something that stuck my fancy to come up. That something finally came up, and I got outbid in the last few seconds.

Damn eBay. Why can't they work like a real auction?

Snipers, man. Freakin' snipers. Unfortunately, that's what eBay boils down to: sniping.

Which is what seperates it from real auctions.

Ya know, I remember hearing about a site years ago that would extend an auction by a couple of minutes if someone tried to snipe. This would then give the other bidders a chance of fighting back.

But, I'm like kiapurity: I pretty much only go for BuyItNow listings.

If it were an option for this sort of thing, I would too. Unless of course, I stood to get it cheaper this way.

Unfortunately, this was like a one in a million item, so I don't expect to see it again any time soon, bid or buy.

The only reason why I "bid" anymore on ebay is when I use "buy it now!!!" opinion because I really freaking hate snipers.

Though, the best part about losing one auction was that it let me find the same manga for ... 8 dollars. Much cheaper than 100+ it was going for. Epic.

Aww, what a cute watch too.

Kind of reminds me of my Final Fantasy 7 watch, with the cover art of Cloud in the middle of the watch face. The watch hands glow in the dark to boot. My dad had gotten it from a friend of his who worked at a watch store - there was a something about the watch that was defective, so they were going to pitch it. Instead, the guy gave it to my dad cause he knew he had kids. So I got that watch for Christmas, cause it turns out there was nothing wrong with it.

That was many, many years ago - and it's still the only watch I own, cause I love it that much. I've never seen another one like it for sale anywhere.

Man, that stinks... But eBay's been like that ever since it started. Some people have actually made tools for auto-sniping! Just put in your "real" highest bid and how many seconds before the end of auction, and it bids for you. It's been years since I've seen one though, since I barely use eBay anymore.

I think with Yahoo! auctions, you can set it up so that whenever someone bids just before the auction ends, the time automatically gets extended. But then, since when does anyone outside of Japan ever use Yahoo! auctions?

Anyway, sorry to hear about the lost auction... But I think it's a little silly to wish for eBay to work like a real auction! Things are the way they are and just griping about them won't change things. Maybe you'll see an auction like that again sometime soon? I hope you manage to get yourself a cool watch! I've gone without a watch for years for the same reason.

Used to use the auto-sniper, but then I heard they started charging for it...

But I think it's a little silly to wish for eBay to work like a real auction!

I disagree; I think it's perfectly reasonable to wish for it, though expecting it to happen, on the other hand, is a whole 'nother story.

The seller says they MIGHT have more, but don't know. One like that is pretty rare; there are tons of Nintendo/Mario watches on eBay (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=Mario+Watch), but I seriously question their legitimacy (save for maybe the Game & Watches).

Was this it?

http://resources.webmasterdigest.com/reviews/jbid-watcher.html

I never said it was unreasonable, just silly! Like wishing my shoes were made of bubble gum. Of course the issue with sniping has been brought up with eBay, and they're aware of it, but their stance is that if you originally bid the absolutely highest amount you would've paid, then snipers shouldn't matter. If they snipe for less than or as much as you bid, you'd still win. If they snipe for more than you bid, then well, it's more than you wanted to pay for it anyway, right? Just because they beat you by 50 cents or a dollar doesn't mean that their maximum bid wasn't much higher.

I mean, of course sniping is still annoying, no matter how you slice it. But I think they're right! I've gotten upset at being sniped out by things before, but yeah, at that point it was more than I was willing to pay anyway... And every single thing I've bid for on eBay and lost, except for one, I've eventually found again and won or found through other means. If there's something really important to me, eheh, I snipe myself. And I bid as high as I possibly can... literally to the point where, if the price + shipping were a dollar more, I actually couldn't afford it. But like I said, it depends on how important it is... If I lose I figure I only have myself to blame. Or lack of money.

Have you heard of Vickney auctions? It's a theoretical type of auction. I think it's an idea tossed around in computer programming lectures as an example of creative thinking to acheive a desired result, when normal situations don't. The idea is that the winner of such an auction pays the price bid by the second-highest bidder, which is supposed to ensure people TRULY bid their absolute highest amount. If the winner bids lower than they're willing to pay, they're just improving the chances of the next guy winning. If the losers bid lower, then they're just lowering the price the winner pays. So it pays for everyone to bid absolutely as high as possible.

It's difficult to see how to apply this to other situations, but anyway...

That's an interesting approach...

And I think eSnipe or something is what I used to use.

Me, I'm never sure how much is the highest I'm willing to bid. :P It comes down to like "will another dollar hurt?" in the final seconds...

I know the feeling... I guess I get a little too serious when it comes to auctions!! I used to do things like bid odd amounts, like instead of $5, I'd bid $5.78 or something. I guess I figured if someone also wanted to bid $5, they'd think, "Hey, the other guy probably also bid $5. If I just bid $5.01 then I'd steal it from him!" And then he'd bid and my bid would go up to $5.51 and he'd think, "It's higher? Maybe he's bid too high on this one... I'll forget about it..." I worked out a whole little psycological game with this!!!

But yeah... JBid worked really well, back when I used it! Like I said, it's been years... And I usually didn't trust it to snipe so I'd end up sniping on my own anyway. It was painful back on dial-up, but doable.

I do the same thing with my bid amounts. :)
