Pokemon, rarr! But seriously, Nintendo had this planned out for at least a few years. Ruby and Sapphire were released with all the old-school Pokemon, but with no way to obtain them. Pokemon Colosseum filled in a few blanks, and FireRed/LeafGreen fill in the rest. It was very craftily designed for old Pokemon fans...
