Sep. 10th, 2004 10:21 pmAlso awesome, Mega Man X Command Mission has good, Legends-quality English voices!
How ironic, as it was X7 that lead me to try at Humber in the first place...

Date: 2004-09-10 09:50 pm (UTC)As for Zero, what bothered me most about X7's was that he couldn't act. The voice was jarring at first, but it grew on me. I think this one sounds a little too close to X, frankly, in terms of pitch. Something deeper might've been preferable, though not with the gruffness of Solid Snake Zero in X7. Something more like the Japanese one might've been the way to go.
Still, better than "Tuxedo Zero" from X4, who sounded sound Sailor Moon's boyfriend...

Date: 2004-09-11 01:18 pm (UTC)I didn't really get "cheery" from it... the "Okay Epsilon..." but rather, it sounded more like he had a plan. Dunno if that's how it was supposed to be in the Japanese one, however.
As I said somewhere else, while X's actor CAN act now, the voice is still too deep and the lines do seem off. Outside of the battles, at least it sounded a little better like when he calls Spider a bounty hunter, but based everything I know of the characters' attitudes and all of the voices I heard for them, I still stand with what I've been saying, firmly so.
Lines off, maybe. Perhaps they're playing more to the North American perception of X, which seldom has him as a cocky bastard? ;P As far as too deep... I think this is as deep as it should get, but it shouldn't be deeper than Zero; in fact, I might even suggest the two be switched, though I wish that Zero's were a bit more deeper than X(as opposed to how much deeper X's is from Zero), not only to portray the Japanese version's casting better, but to distinguish between the two better. Then again, maybe they wanted the two heroes to sound similar.
So yeah, X sounds like he's right at the limit of what he should be, to me. Any more, and that'd be too much. But I can hear that voice as X rather easily now when I play Z3 or just think of X talking.
As for Zero... he sounds not unlike what I used to envision in my head in fanfiction prior to X6... maybe they've read Bass Is Not A Fish? ;) Because the sort of sly Zero I heard here would fit in there pretty well...

Date: 2004-09-11 01:36 pm (UTC)Heh, people hated the voice Corlett(if I'm not mistaken) did for X here. People say he sounded like he was 40, though he sounded pretty good for 40 if one asks me.
I agree that Zero should be deeper, though. Maybe Red's onto something with the way they're trying to portray him here, though, to show a shift to MMZ?
Either way, like I said, I'd prefer deeper for Zero, too. Maybe this is because it's X's show?
Incidently, the only thing that REALLY bothered me about X7's Zero was that he couldn't act... I sorta liked the voice, though it made me laugh a bit.

Date: 2004-09-11 02:13 pm (UTC)True, I forgot about that. But still, that remains an example, not an exception.
Zero's change, I think it just awkwards the story tremendously to do that. We had a deep as hell Zero in X7, then a youth sounding one in CM, who knows what God has in store for X8.
Yeah, but let's face it, X6 is the first place for fault to be laid, because it's the first one to change it in the Mega Man series, then again in X7. If they stick to this one, I think I'll live. Maybe tell the guy to deepen it a bit...
I think that in the end it's sort of a disrespect with the consummers to keep this rollercoaster deal. I don't know, X's voice fit him in X7 if you ask me, but his actor should learn to act.
Agreed. As it is, I'm just happy we have pretty good casting(as opposed to say, X sounding like Doug or Zero sounding like Urkel) so far, and that they seem able to do more than simply read when they act.
I prefer it that way than to keep shifting through actors endlessly, myself. The problem, though, is keeping actors that CAN NOT act for the sake of their lives... it gets hard to sort, really.
Agreed. Between art styles and voices, I'm surprised the characters even feel the same to me from game to game. Consistency would be nice. Right now, this is the best they've been, though, IMO. The way Capcom seems to run with this, I'd rather cut my losses and stick with this group rather than run the roulette wheel again and come up with another X4 or X7 or even MM8(where they couldn't even READ!)
The only thing I still say is that Capcom's localization could be improved. They may get a right, but there's a wrong coming with it, most of the times.
Agreed, though when it comes to stuff with voices, it seems like they have someone else doing the localization. I agree it could be improved, a lot, but CM so far is pretty damned decent. I'm not going to blame them too much for a lack of consistency, because that's sort of been there for awhile. But if they establish some consistency from here on in(having these guys do X8 would be a good start), then that would be a good step in the right direction.
I'm going to Humber starting this week for freelance announcing, hoping to get into this sort of biz. X7 inspired me to do so. Maybe I'll get lucky, and be able to work on a future Mega Man game, X or otherwise. And I'll even do it for free, practically(they can comp me with copies of the games/guides). Just because I want to see it done well.

Date: 2004-09-10 09:46 pm (UTC)There were only 10 movies there, and from what I heard, they really weren't bad. I didn't even get the "stoned out" vibe from Zero at all. As for the rest... well, maybe when I hear the rest, my opinion will change.
But frankly, I don't trust reviews on this kind of thing, especially not when the biggest fault one finds with it is that it's not Legends 3 instead. ;P
Even if the voices aren't at Legends' level, it's still closer to that than it is to X7, X4, or MM8.

Date: 2004-09-10 09:59 pm (UTC)X to me sounds like he should, young but somewhat matured. Sort of like Goku, someone who fights but isn't into the business of hurting people.
The Hyper Mode dialogue(to me) sounds sort of like, "I don't know if this will do it, but let's try anyway."
And as for his victory quote, it sounds alright, like it was a rough battle, but he pulled it off. There was probably direction involved on that, and I think they probably pulled it off to the best of their ability.
I don't know, to me, it sounds like there's actual emotion in the voices here, while in X7, it was like the actors read as far as the part where the characters are robots, and then just said "Ok, let'd do this, I got a spot for a lemonade stand in an hour."

OYE.
Date: 2004-09-18 03:49 am (UTC)I personally agree with you. As soon as Darien sent me links to a few Command Mission movies, I was ESTATIC to hear X sound DECENT. (I mean, c'mon.. This is X's FIRST decent VA..) Zero sounds more like I imagined him as a kid. He's SLIGHTLY lower than X. Not much. His voice sounded like Inuyasha's to me at first.
.. I told this to Kami and she cringed, with a "Oh god. I HATE Inuyasha's english voice!!" .. But I insisted she hear them herself and put the phone to the speaker. She agrees, they're BOTH improvements over X7. And X7 was pretty good in my own eyes aside X and Signas.
Otherwise? THE DAMN GAME ISN'T EVEN OUT YET. God. Can we stop bashing it until it comes out?! It could be ALOT worse. -ALOT-. Of course it's no Final Fantasy. It's Mega Man X in an RPG. Let's just be happy they did a good job and made a game the majority of us will enjoy. It's not gonna save the MM series from humiliation, the game mag companies do too good a job making MM look "uncool" just because Capcom still makes them for us.
Fact is, it's a game that looks to be done well. The voice actors are GOOD and they FIT THE ROLES OF X AND ZERO. For the love of GOD, can we stop bickering "this is wrong this this this and this too!" .. It's NOT our series, it's Capcom's! Let them do what they please with it!
