The novel Halo: Contact Harvest is coming out on October 30th, but I'm not ready to read that. I remain in a very novice position in knowing much about Halo, but I am looking to get something to read this weekend, and I figure one of these books would fit the current theme and mood nicely.

But, I don't know what to get. I hear one of the novels is based on the first game, so that sounds like a good place to start... but which one is that? And is there a novel that precedes it as a prequel? Should I start there?

If anyone reading this even likes Halo that much and can provide some answers, I'd love to know. The weekend is only about a day and a half away.

***I should mention this is pretty iffy. I'd have to see if Indigo has it, and how much. A paperback shouldn't be much, should it...? Probably depend on if Red's check comes tomorrow, too.

Cool, any idea about the one coming out? And which do you recommend first, Fall of Reach or The Flood?

And is there an adaptation of 2?

Cool, I guess I'll go for Fall first, then. :)

Have you seen the Halo Cliff Notes? I didn't know too much about the Halo series, but this seemed like a good primer. It also has info on the novelizations, though they'd probably just mirror what [livejournal.com profile] zerothelegend has already told you.

I think I caught and reported on them, but didn't really read them because I'm still iffy on spoiling stuff. It's like, I still want something of the early Halo experience as full as I can get it, though I'm still iffy on the actual games (partly for time, mostly for money; if I like it enough after playing, I'd find time). I've only ever played Halo 2, and that was briefly at the launch party.

I got pwned. Bad.

And again, also looking for something good to read, too. :)

Yeah, I just realized after I posted that the reason I saw it was probably because it was on PMO!

Hm, about the only thing I think not mentioned above is that Contact Harvest is supposed to be set way before the events of the first game, even before Fall of Reach, to when humans first made contact with the aliens. But according to that article it's not even out yet, and since it's set SO far back I don't think it'd be worth picking up over the two that have already been recommended to you unless you were really hungry for backstory. But again, I'm no big Halo fan...

I get pwned pretty badly at Halo myself! Man, if only you could get online we could probably round up a group to play and die together. You were at the Halo 2 launch party, though?

Hmm, yeah. Actually, I'd like to know if FoR features Master Chief, since I'm sort of reluctant to grab that one first if it doesn't...

Oh my god, don't read the one based on the game. It's like the world's most boring fanfiction had a retarded baby with a game walkthrough.

Hmm, 's funny, that's what I thought this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Game-Boy-02-The-Legend-Of-Zelda-Oracle-Of-Seasons-G_W0QQitemZ320160477401QQihZ011QQcategoryZ279QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem) was. Screw "Worlds of Power," this was a far worse experience. I never even finished.

Hmm, this does put me in a slight spot, since I'm still not sure I'd be able to get through the first game... I'm just not much an FPS guy.

Maybe the important parts are on YouTube. Damn, this sucks. At least with Metal Gear, I have the comic books.

Ah, anyway, thanks for the warning. Maybe I'll see if the local library has it instead of putting down money, and go from there.

Go for 'Fall of Reach'. It's the prequel to the first game, and by miles the best of the novels. Skip 'the flood' (the novelisation of Halo1) entirely, it's bobbins. First Strike is ok, Ghosts of Onyx is only good after having read the others and played the first and second games.

Contact Harvest is designed as the set up novel for the upcoming 'Halo Wars' RTS, which is set nearly 30 years before the FPS games.

Oh, and the Mass Effect novel isn't worth the hassle either.

Hmm, wonder if we'll be able to talk someone into doing a novel for Fable2. Would be amusing.
