Cross-posted from PMO...
Sep. 27th, 2007 04:09 pmThe novel Halo: Contact Harvest is coming out on October 30th, but I'm not ready to read that. I remain in a very novice position in knowing much about Halo, but I am looking to get something to read this weekend, and I figure one of these books would fit the current theme and mood nicely.
But, I don't know what to get. I hear one of the novels is based on the first game, so that sounds like a good place to start... but which one is that? And is there a novel that precedes it as a prequel? Should I start there?
If anyone reading this even likes Halo that much and can provide some answers, I'd love to know. The weekend is only about a day and a half away.
***I should mention this is pretty iffy. I'd have to see if Indigo has it, and how much. A paperback shouldn't be much, should it...? Probably depend on if Red's check comes tomorrow, too.

Date: 2007-09-27 10:03 pm (UTC)Hm, about the only thing I think not mentioned above is that Contact Harvest is supposed to be set way before the events of the first game, even before Fall of Reach, to when humans first made contact with the aliens. But according to that article it's not even out yet, and since it's set SO far back I don't think it'd be worth picking up over the two that have already been recommended to you unless you were really hungry for backstory. But again, I'm no big Halo fan...
I get pwned pretty badly at Halo myself! Man, if only you could get online we could probably round up a group to play and die together. You were at the Halo 2 launch party, though?

Date: 2007-09-27 10:21 pm (UTC)Hmm, this does put me in a slight spot, since I'm still not sure I'd be able to get through the first game... I'm just not much an FPS guy.
Maybe the important parts are on YouTube. Damn, this sucks. At least with Metal Gear, I have the comic books.
Ah, anyway, thanks for the warning. Maybe I'll see if the local library has it instead of putting down money, and go from there.

Date: 2007-09-27 11:22 pm (UTC)Contact Harvest is designed as the set up novel for the upcoming 'Halo Wars' RTS, which is set nearly 30 years before the FPS games.
Oh, and the Mass Effect novel isn't worth the hassle either.
Hmm, wonder if we'll be able to talk someone into doing a novel for Fable2. Would be amusing.
