I think the regular show was doing pretty well for animation as it went further along.

Aye, they made some changes between the two. The one you refer to, "Babes and Bullets" was actually adapted into a primetime TV special. They kept the art style more regular-Garfieldish as a result, but the story was the same, if I recall.
