lbd_nytetrayn: Star Force Dragonzord Power! (Default)

So, last week, I began working on a temporary basis at the bookstore at a local university. Today finished my second "week" (two four-hour days) of training.

How do I like it? It's positively "meh."

It has its ups and downs, most not having to do with the actual job proper. I help people find books for their classes, or I fill out web orders by going down a list and grabbing what we have. I-- dammit, FireFox, why must you always pop up that window at the most RANDOM times?-- I don't love the work, but I don't loathe it, either. It is very much just going in and trying to pass the time from check-in to check-out. Of course, it's better than my FIRST day, where I pretty much just stood behind the counter, waiting for people to need help, and then finding someone who knew what they were talking about.

The place is in a sort of university mall, with some restaurants, a food court, an arcade (Asian style!), an Apple store, some nice stuff. The food court has a Subway, a Wendy's, and a KFC/Taco Bell combo, which is very hard to resist, as those two--Taco Bell especially-- are a rare treat for me. There's also a Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits, an even rarer treat for me. They're closer to what KFC SHOULD be here. They actually have things like biscuits, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and such. NOT eating at these places, especially knowing my time here is short-- three weeks-- is going to be the hard part.

Popeye's also has some sort of new "confetti sweet and sour sauce," which is like sweet and sour sauce, the sort of reddish-pink kind, with some sort of hot peppery kick. It rocks.

At the store itself, at least while I've been there, there have been all sorts of little promotional stuff being given away. Coupons for the bagel shop, gum samples, and today, a can of Sobe energy drink, chilled. I held onto it, though.

The arcade is cool, but I haven't been swayed by the video games. No, something far worse.

Stacker.

I'm pretty good at it. I got to play a bit today, since the line for my bus was so fucking long that even if I joined it, I still wouldn't fit on the bus. And since my DS battery went out upon reaching the end of Metroid Zero Mission. Anyway, I can reach the top, but the more you play, the worse your nerves get.

But I WILL win that DS Lite! But I'm cutting back to one try a day.

...two, tops.

There's got to be some sort of program somewhere online to practice. I'm sure making it would be ridiculously simple for anyone with the know-how. Hell, just a site for that with some ads would probably generate some decent revenue.

I need to learn to control my breathing, heartbeat, that stuff.

Someone's already won one DS Lite, I want to win the other. Preferably without spending too much, of course.

So, besides my workplace being surrounded by all my worst vices, there's only one other really bad part to all of this.

The commute. God, how I hate it. Given the line I mentioned above, it took me about two hours getting home on the fucking bus. A decent chunk of it standing. The time and distance is one thing, but I'd really like to be able to drive instead. Worse yet, I'm reading the damn Metro paper, and it sounds like they're looking at cutting back on services, buses, etc, and raising fares and shit. Seems the problem is that more people don't ride the TTC because it sucks, and the TTC sucks because more people don't ride it. It's a decent idea, in a way, and supposed to help keep congestion off the roads, be good for the environment, but the whole damn program is just a self-consuming ball of suck, and from the looks of things, it's only going to get worse until the whole thing just collapses on itself.

If not for insurance, I think it might be cheaper to drive myself. Even with the cost of gas today. $2.75 every time you step on adds up REAL damn quick.

Oh well. Just three more weeks on this. MAYBE it'll lead to some other longer-term job, then maybe I can afford to get my window fixed and get insurance, and then drive my ass to work. But I shouldn't get ahead of myself.

These three weeks will be... interesting. Longer hours (not terribly so) with even better pay than I got from doing phone calls, but six days a week for three weeks during what I understand is the university equivalent of the Christmas rush.

Interesting, indeed. I don't especially dread it, except maybe trying to move around in it.

Is something like this what you were looking for? (http://www.stoopidgames.com/index.php?changeGame=stacker)
It's not exactly like the arcade version of Stacker, but it should work just fine for practicing.

Hmm, this just could work... it's a lot faster (at odd points)... but maybe that's a good thing?

Thanks!

Aw man, Stacker. I can't believe there are some people who are so good at this game that they can always win! I have a friend who is pretty good at it. He got some free games from it a few times.

He neglected to tell me how the prize selection works though.

On this one, you get to a certain level, and you can choose a minor prize. Keep going and win, and you get a major prize.

Then there's a button that you press to cycle through the prizes, then press the game start button again to select it.

Ooh! Popeye's!

It's a problem here that Popeye's tend to be rather out of the way. But it's so worth it, as it is vastly better than KFC!

They both have their ups and downs, though here in Canada, it largely comes down to the Colonel's herbs and spices vs. Popeye's having a real menu.

I can sympathize with the job issue. I graduated in June and have yet to get anything more solid then my part-time page job at the library. Still, it's better then a lot of jobs I've worked.
