Post-Otakon blues is starting to set in, mostly due to the realization that I really don't have anything to look forward to at the moment. I get my knee looked at on Monday, whoopee.

Things are a bit hot here. I wonder if that's related to why Dante keeps meowing and meowing and meowing and...

As mentioned before, I'm trying to expand my horizons for work, and I've come across a few related items of note that interest me: teaching English abroad.

Frankly, I rather like English, though I have no special credentials in it. In truth, I rather love it, and I could say that it's my favorite language. Learning other languages hasn't worked well for me, so I constantly try to improve my own grammar and vocabulary.

But some people we know, including a friend of Red's, have done so in Japan without it, and it holds a certain allure. It may not require an extreme wealth of education like "Dr." in front of your name, but it holds a certain degree of purpose, and to those not especially informed in the matter, it sounds impressive enough. "Oh, and I spent some time teaching English in Japan." Simple, but sounds a step above "worked at the bookstore through the holidays, fell into depression and bottom of the bottle when the season was over. Say, who's up for some hookers?"

Naturally, the biggest detriment is being away from Red for a bit. And unfortunately, that ad doesn't really tell you how long you'd be away for. But I should think of something fast, since interviews are this weekend for that specific bit. On the other hand, the pay seems pretty good, at least by my standards.

I do wonder if something like this would be good for me, though. Thoughts would be appreciated.

What to do, what to do, what to do.

Actually, I have something to do, and then I'll come back and work on more Otakon recap. Then I have the return PMO to work on as well...

Hmm, PMO might be tricky to keep up if I were gone. Don't suppose that's a HUGE deal, though.

Hmm, that does sound glamorous. How much Japanese would you need to know? I have heard some horror stories from friends who have done the same thing, so it's not always sunshine & sushi, but I think that has to do with the company you end up going with. I'm sure most of them are probably great.

Hmm... Well, if you were in Japan, couldn't you actually scoop a few news items for PMO before it shows up in English? Plus the time zone difference...

I dunno, it sounds worth a shot!

Probably wouldn't know what was going on in a lot of them. XD

'Sides, with the odd exception, I try and keep the news more North America-focused, unless it's in the early goings of something we're getting. Who needs the tease, right?

But then again, I dunno... If you're prone to depression, being alone in a different place without Red may be tough. Heck, sometimes I feel lonely, even before when my friends were literally 1 minute down the street and now that my parents are about the same distance away. Being in Japan WOULD be exciting but it may just as easily make you feel worse. Ever see Lost in Translation?

So... I dunno, I like the idea of doing something drastic once in a while, just for a change of perspective, but I'm not 100% sure this would work out for you.

Ever see Lost in Translation?

Not before the Blockbuster shitcanning, no.

But, I know what you mean. Still, I'm not sure a change of scenery would be a BAD thing... dunno...

I imagine it'd be for at least a year... maybe the summer. Probably one of those two.

A change of scenery would be cool, but you'd be lonely as hell for awhile. :(

I would say do it. I have always wanted to have the chance to teach English abroad, but I kind of wanted to start here in my hometown with a few classes before branching off into other foreign lands. However, you probably do not need that much experience if it was like the advertisement I saw a couple years back. I would personally have a geekgasm at all the stuff I could get that I couldn't get here in the states. But, then again, I would say do what your gut feeling is on the matter.

If you are really, really thinking about teaching English abroad -- or if you just want a chuckle -- I would suggest reading the old "I am a Japanese school teacher" blog.

It moved from it's old location to this site full of ads, but it doesn't seem much worse than anything else on the internet.

Sensitivity warning: This blog is full of observations that might be considered "stereotypical" and possibly even offensive. At the same time, it's one of the funniest things I've ever read.

Start from the oldest (bottom) and just work your way up.
