Figure this one out. It's basically the same team who makes Battle Network that made Legends.

Yet, in Legends, they bothered to give you a map for the dungeons.

Go figure.

Well, you could argue that Battle Network "didn't have room" for all the maps, but... yeah. Legends is a bit more straight-forward, while Battle Network is more of finding things. And going on stupid quests like giving a letter to somebody, walking somebody's dog, rushing to check the mail with a time limit as you furiously press A to scroll past menus...

... which seems to suggest they have a better idea what they're doing with the legends games, since it's not nearly so tedious nearly as often, huh?

..Must be the fact that Legends isn't A: A marketing machine, and B: doesn't place as many of the scavenger hunts in the main line of the game. And doesn't base (hardly) any of them on what amounts to random chance. Ah well. Damn shame such a good concept as BN got bogged down by this kinda stuff. (and the ever-increasing feeling that you're further ahead in the game than you're supposed to be, due to sudden jumps in enemy HP and damage..)

Ironically, if the net wasn't a huge mass of "same," then that'd be a good start. Fortunately they've gotten better, but not exactly great.

I really thought they were onto something in BN2 with the wireframe trees and houses...

...personally, something closer to Net City in the toon, or Mainframe in ReBoot would suit me just fine.

There, too, is the possibility that the team under deadline to get the games out the door, has decided not to even bother implementing a map system. As Gelg pointed out, the BN franchise is sort of Capcom's Megaman cashcow right now. Legends was Megaman's first forray into 3D; most games at the time if you looked at them had SOME sort of map system, even if it wasn't that great. Capcom probably felt they had to put it in there to make the game a bit more appealing. Plus, since they work with a pretty generic tileset for the ruins, the maps really help keep the players from getting lost. Maybe the feeling is that since BN is more of an isometric 2D game, the player doesn't need a map to find his way around. Which is a damn shame, because even a simple map would immensely help BN's playability.

Truthfully, I don't see maps being too necessary. You can already see a fair chunk of the area in the screen, and most of the areas aren't very big to begin with. Sure, it does get a little aggrivating when they throw those arrow panels into the mix, but usually three or four times through any area is enough for me to get it down (and afterall, these days they DO make you run through those areas back and forth. A lot). At least starting in 2 they were smart enough to make unique parts of the internet look different, and give each area a name. All in all I'm sure a map would help some, but I don't think the lack of one takes away from the pleasure of playing the game.

If I would have to complain about anything it'd be Capcom using the same cartridge size since the first game of the series. I think by BN3 they could have acknowledged they had enough of a hit on their hands that they could start using a larger cart size, and most consumers would not be put off by the $5-$10 more to pay. Granted, finding shortcuts and making a game and using a small sized cart to the most of your advantage is becoming a lost art, and many great SNES games accomplished it well. But with more space, and the removal of the need for Capcom to pump out one of these games every year, BN could quickly turn into something even greater.

I agree on the second part.

But the first part, it's crap like BN1 and the Undernet in BN3White that I'm really thinking of. Enough repetition helps, sometimes, but God help you if you put the game down for a week or two as I did.

It may not be neccessary, but it'd still be helpful. They have gotten better about making parts more distinct, but they aren't quite THAT distinct...
