So, Sonic Rush.

Good thing I only paid about half price for it, because so far, one of the two playable characters is driving me bats.

Playing as Sonic, I'm mostly fine, about as good as ever I figure.

Blaze, on the other hand, is death. It took me forever just to pass her first act.

Of course, on the other hand, I'm worried it might be more a stage thing than a character thing, since they both play pretty similarly.

But so far, it's counter-intuitive, with switches behind you to open up ways in front, and a lot of "just missed" marks, either from trying to move forward as much as you can, or letting the momentum carry you. It's hard to tell just which you're supposed to do at which points, resulting in a lot of deaths...

...deaths which would probably be easily avoided if not for the continuous placement of bottomless pits. In the original 2-D Sonics, it seems that often enough, a fall from a high place would see you land at a lower point, allowing you to continue. Here, such an instance feels like a saving grace, as more often, you'll fall down a long pit. Long, long pit. To eventually die. Lovely.

What it boils down to is a matter of repetition, I suppose, but for the kind of play seen here, it feels like there ought to be unlimited lives or something. Or at least more than they're giving you.

I'm really hoping that Sonic Rush Adventure might improve on these problems.

Besides that, though, it's pretty good so far. Less voice acting than I expected, but that's a blessing to some. The boss battles are cool, playing as Sonic is fun, the speed-burst is a welcome addition, and the tricks are kind of neat as well. And the controls seem pretty good, they almost feel a little tighter somehow.

So I won't say it's a bad game, but it's not outstanding, either. It could definitely stand some fine-tuning.
