Jul. 28th, 2004 04:46 pmI hate being right. Really, I do.
Went in to Toys R Us, to find out that "things aren't working out as they'd hoped when they brought me in." In short, my position was terminated, "effective immediately."
Apparently, sales weren't shooting up when I was on the clock, so I more or less seem to have been blamed for their shitty sales practices. Of course, if a potential employer comes a-callin', they're simply saying that due to the state of the business right now, they couldn't afford to keep me.
When I was brought in, I was told the two full-timers were going back to school in the fall, and that I could have a shot at getting some good weekly hours. But apparently, I wasn't "fitting in"(or something like that) as well as they needed me to, despite doing everything they'd told me, them showing me damn near nothing, and often having to be shooed out of the store as I'm trying to get as much done as I can. If I was scheduled til 9:30, they were usually trying to get me out by 15 after.
And after all that, they apparently decided it was best for them to bring someone in from outside the company to fill the role instead.
110%? 115, 120 is more like it, all to be shit on.
They couldn't cite what it was I was doing wrong when I asked them about it, either. They've never once said anything about what I could be doing to do better. In the meantime, I was constantly striving to improve myself, often doing most of the salefloor work and such on weekends, setting up displays, learning of my own initiative how to make signs, etc.
I've said it before, I'll say it again:
Toys R Us takes the "TRU" out of "TRUST."
...
...what the hell, add the "s" in there, too.
Toys R Us of Canada. While the work itself wasn't too bad, I think it's the shittiest place I've ever worked for. Twice.
Take it from one who knows. Unless you don't mind a job with low pay and low security, don't work for them. It's not worth it, and they'll lead you on and stab you in the back.
I wonder if it's this bad in the States. At least I know their sales practices are better there...

Date: 2004-07-28 03:28 pm (UTC)damn.
Date: 2004-07-28 03:34 pm (UTC)TRU has a notification on US applications that says that there is no such thing as a permanent position, than all positions except management are "seasonal", and that employees may be fired at any time, with or without reason or prior notice. so at least in the states they make sure you know that they will eventually fuck you over. this notice on the application made me decide to never turn mine in.
Can you at least sign up for unemployment benefits or anything? I dont know how things work in canada.

(came from Red Draco's journal)
Date: 2004-07-28 03:52 pm (UTC)I was, however, getting the impression that I was being underappreciated, and felt that I didn't quite fit in there... feh.
The bright side of this is that my dad was able to get me a full-time, decent-paying job for an electrical company, doing odd jobs for the summer, till I go back to school.

Think of it this way. Toys'R'Us doesn't like you, you don't like them, this just clears the way for you to find employment somewhere where you WILL like it. There has to be someplace where they'll appreciate a hard-worker like you, I can't imagine there are very many around nowadays.
If it helps, you can use me as a reference. ;) Sorry man, that blows big time. Hope it gets real better real soon.

Date: 2004-07-29 10:16 am (UTC)I wouldn't know about that; the Toys R Us in our area sucks ass. The sales people are unhelpful, the shelfs are always half empty, and they never have what you're looking for...
But anyway, this sucks. I hope your prospects clear up soon.

Date: 2004-07-29 10:30 am (UTC)My experiences with Toys R Us in the US have been pretty good most of the time, as they at least know to mark down merchandise that's not going to sell otherwise. We still have stores here that stock Mario Kart 64 and Zelda: OoT figures at full price.
While the US cleared out their TransFormers Armada stock, it's still full price here. Back when things were a little better for us, I managed to snag a few TFs to feed my addiction at rock-bottom prices... and even less if the packaging was damaged.
