Feb. 10th, 2007 06:58 pmAn Allspark topic lead to me watching the season 3 TransFormers episode "Ghost in the Machine" again.
In it, Starscream's "ghost" takes over Scourge's body and attacks Galvatron and the Decepticons before running off to Unicron to try and get his body back.
No, that's not a spoiler, that's the first three minutes of exposition and set-up.
Anywho, feel free to check it out:
Part 1:
Part 2:
Part 3:
This was one of the episodes I personally liked. Sure, the animation was pretty iffy, but that was Season 3 for the most part. At the same time, the season as a whole appealed to me as a kid.
It was perhaps a little darker in tone, but still colorful (proving that the two don't have to be mutually exclusive), and I really loved the whole high-tech/future settings and stuff. In addition, my parents were among those who refused to let me see the movie in theaters.
I am very sure that the reason the movie can be considered a flop is due to my parents, and any others like them.
Naturally, I went into Season 3 a bit clueless. Optimus was gone, Megatron was gone, or reborn as Galvatron, I found out. The Autobots had a city. The Decepticons had a planet, a shitty one at that. But that didn't matter to me, I liked the idea that the Autobots had their planet, the Decepticons their own. There was a lot more space travel and battles, and a lot more Cybertron, which was more fun now that it had a population of more than a handfull of one-shot females and Shockwave. And it was my first exposure to pretty much the entire movie cast.
"Wow, so this Unicron guy can turn into a planet?" is what I'm sure I said in reaction to finding out he was more than just a floaty head with a deep voice.
Oh, and then lots and lots of Combiners. I loved giant robot battles, which drew me to Power Rangers later. But giant robots that were giants to giant robots? That was grand. Throw in the likes of Metroplex and Trypticon, and later Fortress Maximus and Scorponok (for one ep, anyway), and then you had giant robots who were giants to giant robots who were giant to giant robots who were giant to us. It'd be about 20 years before the ante was upped with the release of Cybertron Primus, the good god counterpart to the evil Unicron. Sadly, the two never actually fought with the modern forms.
Though there was a really big Omega Prime/Optimus Supreme/whatever they used in Energon. Which was alright. But deus-exing everyone to just be bigger wasn't as good to me.
And then there's the fact that Rodimus Prime was my first Prime toy ever, my second or third TransFormer ever (my first was Twin Twist and Wheelie fits that third slot). I never did have a Megatron, or a Galvatron, though. So Cyclonus became my de-facto Decepticon leader.
Come to think of it, my sides were rather unbalanced. Always favored the Autobots, though Decepticons became more frequent later. My Decepticons had no official figurehead, they had no city... in fact, early on, my Decepticon ranks sucked so bad that Cyclonus and Scourge had to form a truce with the Autobots, just so they wouldn't get slaughtered.
Much fun. I just wish my mom hadn't tricked me into getting rid of my whole collection, save for two Micromasters before we moved back to Wingate. The thought of it, and WHO I wound up having to give them to just makes me want to retch right here where I sit. Come to think of it, that's probably the worst thing I've done in my life.
...moving on. ¬_¬
At least once I started earning my own money, I was able to start getting them again. So my collection has slowly grown, though I'd say the vast majority of it is stuff from the Beast Wars era til now. I missed out on getting the reissue Rodimus Prime, sadly, but I'm thinking that besides Energon Rodimus, a different character, Don's redesigned "Classics" Titanium Rodimus Prime would fill the void nicely.

Date: 2007-02-11 04:16 am (UTC)only involving Starscreams ghost taking over like, Some sort of crappy insect guy.
That was alot cooler though because Starscream wasnt even a factor in that series, before then or after that.

Date: 2007-02-11 05:06 am (UTC)And not exactly the same plot, Unicron didn't play into it at all. Starscream was just kind of screwing around.

Date: 2007-02-11 05:29 pm (UTC)I never saw much of Season 3, so when I learned later in life that not only did Starscream come back, but he tricked the almighty UNICRON to do it, I was happy. :D Too bad Season 3 had shoddy writing and shoddy animation...
Seeing as how Starscream is still alive while tumbling through space at the end of the ep... he's not quite dead yet! :x That's what I like to believe, anyways. Didn't Galvatron say his weapons were neutralized earlier? So HOW was it that he delivered that parting shot to Starscream...?

Date: 2007-02-12 12:12 am (UTC)As for that parting shot, I'm guessing that their weapons might've repaired enough for him to do that. Don't TFs have limited healing like humans?
Don't know Trypticon's affects on weaponry, either. Maybe his stuff is limited-time.
As for Starscream, I think it could go either way. For the sake of BW, I think he could've died again there, but for the sake of Pretenders and so forth, he could live on. Or just get another body.

Date: 2007-02-12 04:50 am (UTC)I love the combiners, especially the Stunticons, Combaticons, and the Constructicons. I wish they had Omega Supreme on Season 3. I found the tone of the third season interesting.
Ironically, my TF toy collection was small during my childhood (only got two $5 figures as a gift once). I couldn't afford any back then, but now I can. ;)
