I think it was the mtv music awards 2005. Not too sure. I remember MJ taking the joke seriously. Not much else.

It was earlier than that. I remember watching one of those "MTV Video Music Awards Uncensored" specials in 2001-2002, talking about it in the past tense. I think it was in the late nineties, and as a big joke, MTV decided to give Micheal Jackson the "Artist of the Millennium" award. Only no one told Jackson that it was a joke.

This came around the same time MTV was still funny, and they were giving out awards for "Best Sandwich in a Motion Picture" and Vanilla Ice was nominated for "Best Inanimate Object."

They nominated him as a joke, he went to the Video Music Awards thinking it was a real honor and accepted it, and everyone in the audience was like, "Uhh... I guess we should humor him."

I still don't know if Jackson ever figured it out. I mean, it's been years, but still....

But if that's what IGN is talking about, the Wikipedia contributors didn't get the joke either.
