So Windows has... or perhaps "had" this neat feature where you click on a picture, and it opens it in this sort of Explorer program that would let you cycle through all your pics, view them at full size, save or delete them, etc.

Then I get the damn Windows update the system's been bugging me about forever.

Now, every time I click a pic, it opens in Mozilla.

How the hell did that happen? I want it back the other way!

Right click an image, select 'properties'.

Where it says 'opens with:' click the button labelled 'change...'

Find in there something called 'Windows picture and fax viewer', and select it. Make sure the 'always use the selected program to open this kind of file' box is ticked.

Repeat for all image file types.

Might need to go into Firefox and disable some stuff too.

Well, that did it, though the icons seem uglier now than I remember... didn't they used to say whether it was a gif or jpg or whatever on the icon itself? Oh well, function first, right?

Sounds like you had a different image viewer installed at some point. I know that ACDSee does little format specific icons. Don't think the windows piccy viewer does though.

Well, they're still specific, it seems, just different than they were before. Jpg is like a blue square with a smaller orange square in the middle, and gif is a blue square with a red square, blue circle, and yellow triangle converging.

Before, I think Jpg was like an eye or something, with a red banner on the top-left that read "jpeg" or something...

That sounds like Photoshop's icon style (well, when they still used an eye for their logo).

There's still a way to change just a file's icon without changing program association.
Viewing any folder, go to Tools -> Folder Options...
Click on the File Type tab, then click the file type you want to change the icon of.
Click Advanced, then Change Icon.
Click Browse, and find the directory of the icons you want to use (in the case of Photohop, the icons would be found by selecting Photoshop.exe)

It is worth mentioning that the way Windows handles filetype settings SUCKS.

Flabio's on the money!

By the way, I do have an external USB hard drive sitting around. Would you like me to send it to you? I'm not sure what the capacity is, and I haven't actually used it myself...
