Aug. 19th, 2006 01:23 am1) New issue of Nintendo Power is due out soon, and there's a preview here. Final Fantasy 3 and Star Fox Command are the big cover stories, plus big Zelda moments, and a bit on Lunar Knights, the DS follow-up to Boktai.
-----
2) Speaking of Nintendo and Zelda, Camp Hyrule ended today. Sadly, during the closing ceremony, I got disconnected and couldn't get back in. Guess I probably didn't win the Wii, either. :\
But, I did manage to grab the transcripts of the various NOA chats they had, and I'll try and post those at some point soon.
-----
3) UK site DVD Times has an interview up with Mr. Peter Cullen, voice of Eeyore, the first Predator, Mario on Saturday Supercade, and best known as G1's Optimus Prime in the original TransFormers cartoon, as well as the upcoming 2007 flick.
Awesome, awesome man. I love how he's taking all of this, and the respect he seems to have for the fans and the character.
-----
4) Want Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins? 1UP is having a giveaway.
I'd enter, but I'm probably not eligible.
-----
5) Travelling this summer? Well, if you can sneak it past airport security, then maybe you can enjoy these motherf***in' games on your motherf***in' plane.
-----
6) Kaz Hirai sez, "PS3 will keep--or surpass--PS2's market share."
Well, there's only one thing I can say to that...

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist)
I'll conceed that it MIGHT keep it, but surpass? I obviously have my doubts.
-----
7) Gamespot has new screens from Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Rivals.
-----
8) And now... The TransFormers.
I have to admit, though, there are a couple of Decepticons even I don't recognize offhand, so...
-----
9) GameDaily takes a look at video game themes and features we can do without.
-----
10) Next-Gen reports that Dead Rising has raised Capcom's prospects.
NikkoCitiGroup raised its forecasts for Capcom due in large part to Dead Rising's "brisk repeat business" as well as "reforms at Capcom USA."
Was it these same reforms that cost us voice work in Mega Man ZX?! WAS IT?!
-----
11) Also from NG, heh, good luck getting your hands on a PS3 this year. If they haven't started yet...
2 million at launch? Even with the price, I question if that will suffice worldwide.
-----
12) As OnNintendo shows, what better place for a Team Mario vs. Team Final Fantasy basketball game than on an airship?
-----
13) Slashdot reports on concerns regarding the PS3 motion-sensing functionality, in that it seems incomplete as of this time.
-----
14) All I will say is, oh hell yeah.
Nothing more annoying. Sorry folks.
-----
15) Oooh, decisions, decisions.
And even though I grew up on TV dinners and actually enjoy them, I'd like to think I could do better than that with my choice.
I think Mario or Miyamoto would be musts. Inafune would be good, and any of the Mega Men. Or all. We could raid a buffet.
Of course, that'd be provided I could get a translator.
-----
16) File this one next to the "Jumping to Conclusions" mat.
-----
17) Kotaku presents, "Where GameCubes Go When They Die", in memory of the not-quite-dead-yet(there's still Zelda and Super Paper Mario) console.
At first I felt pity, but then I was almost proud of it, thinking "good for you for still being active!"
It's the same feeling that I get when I'm greeted by old people at Walmart...
-----
18) Let's Polka, mon!
-----
19) I caught this issue of Batman the other day, and it's quite interesting to say the least, and this simply furthers it all.
-----
20) PSM Podcast 4 looks at four reasons to get a PS3:
WTF is up? We’re back with a brand new PSM Video podcast! This week we’re highlighting 4 of the reasons to buy a PS3. If you really need a reason, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword and Assassin’s Creed will all showcase the PS3 in their own fun-tastic ways…and we’re gonna call in the whole gang to prove it.
Chris also has a little surprise at the end for you old skool game fans too!
And the surprise is pretty cool.

Date: 2006-08-19 08:57 am (UTC)on new Sonic screens (7) -- Wow, pics of Knuckles in Rivals! yay! And a new stage. Interesting. Funny, this reminds me of a 2D-on-3D game idea I had as a kid, featuring Knuckles and a similar idea for a level. Let's just see if they make a hotel stage, too, or a remake of Spring Yard. >_>
on Gamedaily's hated game themes (9) -- To be honest, I have yet to play a single WW2 first person shooter! But the concept never appealed to me, and the sheer number of them out there by now is intimidating and confusing. Real war settings = generic war settings. How can developers stand out with a quality release if their title is lost in the same idea as everyone else? I prefer the originality and delightful, trademark flair of games like Quake and Perfect Dark. You can tell a Quake game by looking at it or seeing the weapons. You couldn't do that with a random WW2 shooter. Although I was willing to try Call of Duty 2, it looks like it knows where it's at. Even though it looks like it's well made and has good fundamentals, I consider this a tactful and bold move on my part and I deserve a pat on the back.
I agree with the licensed games bit. Why play Cars the videogame when you can play a driving game that was, well you know, actually designed to be worthwhile for what it is? For many license games, the only reason they exist is to offer people a subpar gaming experience with that license tacked onto it. You can tell a questionable licensed game when it's released on every single console. Of course, there's always exceptions.
Expensive micro transactions: I have yet to buy something on Xbox Live Marketplace but I'm gonna feel like stepping on my own foot when I do. I've already seen a Perfect Dark Zero match I couldn't join because I haven't bought that map. (First time I found about this) Paying $10 for a new map sounds like frowns.
Time limits: I don't think time limits in themselves are a bad thing (always a supporter of arcade-style presentation and gameplay) just the way they are implemented, or other things in the game. If you had a level that made you find 5 things in 4 minutes, it's not so much the time limit that's the problem but the fact that you have to find 5 things that you don't know where they are in the first place. I actually recall two places off hand in Star Fox Adventures that are like this. One of them requires that you find baby dinosaurs and blow a horn while next to them. On one hand, each of the dinosaurs' locations are revealed to you one-by-one as you find each previous one. This is good. But on the other hand, every time you find one, you don't get a bonus to your time. In other words, if you took too long to find the first one, it's impossible to complete the mission in time. Think about arcade-style games. After you reach a checkpoint, you are generally awarded /just enough/ time to reach the next one. It's an excellent system. Piece by piece! As opposed to, giving you a long list of things to do and a large amount of time to do it.
Recycled content: Just wanted to point out that the writer just complains about Xbox Live Arcade for this one. o_o
on PS3 shortages (11) -- Given PS3's price, the nature of the technology, and Sony's track record... isn't 2 million quite a good amount? Wikipedia tells me that Xbox 360 sold about 1.5 million before the year ended. And didn't Xbox 360 have far less available units at first?
on Mario basketball airship (12) -- For a moment I forgot that Mario had airships. That's pretty cool!
on PS3 motion sensing controller (13) -- That's a fanboy lie! Everyone knows that Sony completed the controller 7 years ago. The patent says so!!
on PSM podcast (20) -- I viewed this just to see the surprise at the end, but I really got more out of the PS3 game previews. Those games actually look all right! Anyway, the 'surprise' is just some guy's NES-related stuff, so it was boring to me.

11) It might work, hard to say, really. Also depends on if they get that number produced.

Date: 2006-08-19 09:34 am (UTC)(11) -- True. It's not so much a matter of if two million is enough, but rather, can they even produce that many in time. Like I said, 2 million is quite optimistic if anything. Not like Nintendo, who is living in an archaic era in which there is never a shortage of consoles. Crazy ol' Nintendo, always in their own little world...

Date: 2006-08-19 09:36 am (UTC)I think it's sort of a pick-and-choose kind of thing, and it feels like they're trying to take it all.
I'm all for backing your system 100%, but some things, like "maybe it's too cheap" just really are not the kind of things you want the consumers to hear.

Date: 2006-08-20 06:44 am (UTC)And as far as I can tell, the functions of the Wii controller and the PLAYSTATION 3 controller are too different for Sony to sue Nintendo over (plus, they're in so much legal crap now, I doubt they'd wanna risk starting a case themselves).
If Sony intended for a tilting controller since the beginning, then how come noone knew about it until two weeks before E³ 2006 (Re: Warhawk demo)? And, yes, Nintendo is just as guilty with the Wii Remote's speaker (it was a surprise to 3rd parties at E³, if memory serves me right).
Hey, Nintendo even had a patent for an Xbox Live-like service, BEFORE the N64 was released (or sometime around the N64's life, at least). The patent wasn't approved until a few months back, though. But it was filed way back when.
And you can't ignore the fact that for the PS3 controller, we lost rumble (for now, at least. What are the odds that Sony will bring it back?) for tilt. Even though the Wii Remote has both, and so did a 3rd-party controller for PS1!

Date: 2006-08-20 09:27 am (UTC)As far as the speaker, it's slightly different there, since as far as I can tell, it doesn't look like it was meant to compete with something else someone else is doing, unless I missed something.

Date: 2006-08-19 03:11 pm (UTC)14) I support watermarking of ripped sprites. (JK) Seriously though people watermarking images that could be easily found by the masses sort of dumb, maybe if it was super rare one of a kind production art like the EXE ones Ryouko had, I guess that would be the only time I'd allow watermarking.
15) This one is tough, too many characters I know have odd eating behavior. Probably with a tetrad, the yellow t block probably.
17) Super Paper Mario is delayed until next year! Maybe Tomy will have time to release Narutard 4 at the rate they're going.
18) I think the best part was afro dude.
