More Donkey Kong Talk
Aug. 14th, 2006 04:03 pmRe-reading the sidebars in that article about DK's history at 1UP, I just want to say that I don't think that Donkey Kong Country or Diddy's Kong Quest were bad at all. "Mediocre" gameplay seems a bit harsh, really.
DKC3 was alright, though I never did finish it, after several starts. I suppose one could say that the DKC games might not lend themselves as well to "sequel-itis" as other series, but the first two games I think were quite solid, and the first felt especially fluid to me, as I think back to the Blockbuster game championships where I had to practically get movement through stages down to an art form that never really stopped.
Of course, the rotating cast might not have helped, either. I mean, by the third game, none of the original characters were playable anymore.
...DK64, on the other hand... if I ever get a player's guide, I might try that one again, but...
I'm not trying to say that Donkey Kong Country would topple Super Mario Bros. 3 or anything like that, but I do think it was a lot better than simply "mediocre."
In the end, though, even if the graphics were more akin to Donkey Kong '94 on the Game Boy, I still think it would have been a run romp.

Date: 2006-08-14 10:50 pm (UTC)1) Miyamoto was making Yoshi's Island at the time, and was told by higher ups that they didn't like the art style it had compared to DKC. At that time, Yoshi's was very similar to Super Mario World's. In reaction to the criticism, he went off and made it even less shiny rendered.
2) It pushed Nintendo towards the partnership with SGI that would eventually become the N64.
3) It sold very well, the sales spike for SNES's that it caused impacted the launch of several of the 32 bit generation consoles.

Date: 2006-08-14 11:40 pm (UTC)DKC and DKC2 were NOT MEDIOCRE.
That pisses me off. A lot. DKC2 was one of the first games I ever had, was loads of fun, and even my damn Dad played it.
THAT annoys me. Someone get my gun.

Oddly, I own the first and the third, but not the second....

Date: 2006-08-15 04:52 am (UTC)DKC1 was about fighting the pirate reptiles or whatever, but in was in DKC2's nature to give all the pirates, like, triple peg legs and eye patches tattoo'ed all over their body. UGH!
Stupid Rare!
You know, I used to say that Rare couldn't do anything original or just anything /good/. But they made Krystal and Perfect Dark Zero, so I can't anymore. >_> There goes my dramatic closure.
I'm indifferent to Miyamoto's comment. I generally agree since I agree that DKC got lame.
Altho to know about DKC's impact, it's interesting.
