Pissed off
Mar. 18th, 2004 09:52 pmThis is REALLY getting on my nerves. Recently, from out of nowhere, Internet Explorer just started crashing on me about half the time I usually try and mess with a field that requires typing-- address bars, username/password entry, I think even the occassional message board. Yet other times, it won't happen, such as now. Sometimes it's just when I start typing, others if I scroll through previously-entered data, or sometimes even if I just click on it, or want to cut/copy something. But it's just the fields you can type in; copying HTMLed text isn't a problem.
And it's not just IE, it pretty much crashes Windows, save for mIRC if I'm using it, and sometimes other than that, all that's left is the background. Of course, since NOTHING else of Windows is left, I'm forced to reboot at this point. When it loads back up, then the desktop background disappears, and I have to restore the active desktop.
THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, AND I WANT IT TO STOP!!! >_<
Anyone have any advice that DOESN'T involve switching to a new browser? I prefer IE with the drop-downs and settings that it has saved, plus all my addresses and bookmarks are here, too. Red has her browser with her stuff, I have mine. It works out well.
Actually, IE's been acting up in other ways lately. Some bookmarks, rather than not working, cause our good, stupid friend "Illegal Operation" to appear, thus killing my Windows aps as well, though it's not as bad as the above, where EVERYthing Windows goes down. Additionally, if I try and access a page like Gelg's here, since there is an incomplete section that can't/won't load, it automatically forwards me to a 404 page, rather than just letting me access the left side(so I have to use Red's browser for that). It's happened to me elsewhere, too, like Mega Man Network, where if(and only if) the banner ad doesn't load, the whole thing shunts me forward to a 404. Fortunately, that's not been the case lately.
So can ANYone explain to me why I'm suddenly having these problems, or better yet, what I can do to solve them? Because it's really getting on my nerves...

PS: Btw, we just ran defrag and scandisk, and the first part still happens.

Date: 2004-03-19 09:48 am (UTC)Run the System File Checker. (Again, what OS if you need instructions on this one.)
Also, if you're using Windows NT, 2000, or XP, then you can make the system usable again after it crashes to the "blank wallpaper". Just CTRL+ALT+DEL, bring up the task manager and select "New task" and then restart explorer by typing 'explorer' in the run box. If you're using Windows 98, I don't think there's any way to prompt Windows Explorer to relaunch.
The person above is sorta right. It's Windows Explorer that's at fault here. But it is linked closely to the errors in Internet Explorer because they are so closely based on one another and share a huge number of .dll files and registry entries, etc. As such, if repairing doesn't help, it can be useful to roll back as far as you can and then re-upgrade to whichever version of IE you're using. (Again, see me with your OS version and IE version for instructions on this one.)
Another note: Some Adware/Spyware can cause IE to crash since it tries to get into IE. Have you recently run Ad-aware/Spybot to see if you're at least mostly clean?

Repair IE. (What OS/Version of IE if you need instructions on doing this.)
Run the System File Checker. (Again, what OS if you need instructions on this one.)
Not sure how to do either one; We're using Windows 98.
Thanks :D You save our butts all the time.

Date: 2004-03-19 03:46 pm (UTC)Okie. To repair IE, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel
Locate Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools (or something similar; they word it diff in each release)
Highlight
Act like you're gonna uninstall it.
When the window pops up, choose to repair your current installation.
To run the System file checker:
Start > Run
Type: "sfc" without the quotes
Choose the option to do a full scan. Make sure you have your Windows 98 CD. If not, then before you start, browse out to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs and make sure A) the directory is there, and B) It's full of files that start with WIN and end in .CAB. (they'll have different numbers, starting from like 20-something.)
Overwrite any files that it tells you to, but make a backup. Save it in a place where you will be able to find it. (I'd suggest a "backup" folder on the root directory of C:\, since the root directory is easiest to access in safe mode if we need to do any restoration.)
Additionally, get me more details on the Illegal Ops errors if possible. (Screenshot, or if you've got to reboot, then jot down the details such as XXX caused an invalid pagefault in YYY or what have you. Memory addresses are not necessary. (The 0x800ccc0e sort of things.) Write down any file names it complains about, though. And for your sake, pray it doesn't say kernel32.dll or user32.dll. If that's the case, there won't be a LOT we can do.
Good luck and report back when you can!
