Question for the masses.
Dec. 14th, 2003 10:10 amJust a passing curiousity for those with their own characters/fancharacters(and I know friends of mine have them): does the thought of your character(s) in erotic/hentai material(lemons, fiction, pictures, whatever) bother you at all? Is it something you'd want to see, or are indifferent to? Would you mind if someone else used your characters in such a way?
Just sorta curious on that one. There's so much based on licensed characters, and sometimes I wonder if the creators are at all bothered by it. Personally, I'm not.
In fact, I think it's perhaps the ultimate compliment one can receive on their characters, albeit in a geeky sort of way(nothing wrong with that). If someone likes a character enough to see them that way(or in some cases, to want to do them), that seems to show probably a higher appreciation of the character than just about anything, other than maybe changing your name or something. Of course, that's more of an "apples and oranges" case; odds are, if you like someone enough to adopt their name, they aren't one you'd care to see naked or have sex with. Except maybe if you're homosexual. But that's a whole 'nother debate altogether.
Anyway(not a pity plea here), this LJ doesn't oft see too many comments, but I'm hoping those who have characters of their own will reply with their thoughts on it here.

Date: 2003-12-14 04:35 pm (UTC)As for me, I find there's a bit of a fine balance between what I like in terms of my character being used in a hentai/ecchi situation and what I don't.
The question is - is it a fan character or is it original.
if it were my original series, and my original characters, and people saw fit to write hentai work and slash 'em and fem slash 'em, I'd probably sit around reading fanfiction on the net all day long. I probably couldn't help myself - I'd love to see what people think of my characters and being a fangirl myself, I'd love to see what mine wanted to do with on the yaoi, yuri, etc. etc. etc. fronts. Especially since fans always seem to have insights that the original creator never even bothered to think about the repercussions of when they wrote things that way.
On the other hand, I tend to get a little more defensive when it's a fancharacter. I'm not sure the explanation for this, but I think because I already do have a background to work with, and I created my character to fit into that previously created background, I sort of have my own ideas about whether or not that character would be getting along with others...etc. Some characters just wouldn't get into that kind of situation. And sometimes it doesn't really go along with the fandom too well.
Although, as you say, it's certainly a compliment that people like my character enough to wish to write it. I find it more of a compliment when directed at original (completely original) creations though.

Date: 2003-12-14 10:33 pm (UTC)but yeah, I'd say it's a huge compliment. It always is, thought some authors don't see fanfiction that way.
woos, forgot to say...

Date: 2003-12-15 11:00 am (UTC)On the one hand, it is, in a way, as Tim said.. however. I think there's another layer to it. It pretty much has nothing at all to do with their opinion of the story, as I see it, but rather their opinions of the characters, that is, whether they find them sexy. This can be anything from them just being cheaply designed with the right proportions, to their whole personality.
It basicly depends on the porn. Some of it may respect the original story line by ducking out of it as sort of a "sidestory" or a blatant parellel sex universe. And then it depends on the author. Some authors might obnoxiously preferring their parellel sex universe and their fan pairings, in which case it's exactly what Tim said and there's every reason to be upset. But sometimes it's just some legitimate fun. The way to tell, I figure, is by looking at their non-pornographic fan works. The more these deviate from the original the more I'd suspect a lack of respect.
As for my own personal opinions? It depends on my intent with the character. Gelg.EXE, any Nekori, Lilith.EXE and the like are all either over-idealized physically, or highly sexualized. I'd kind of just accept porn involving them. Other characters, like every normal Gelgameth, Akemi Kankyo, Sylvia (hey, she's actually one of my original characters!) would surprise me more. Gelgameth is, usually, a little bit crazy and not all that pretty. 22XX Gelg has a lovable charm to him, I guess, but to center porn on him is scary. and.. Akemi's just a geek. I don't know WHAT to think about the fanhordes she seems to actually be attracting. (I can't even roleplay her consistantly!)

Date: 2003-12-15 11:53 pm (UTC)...though in the case of Legends Celeste and Nytetrayn, I might let Mags take a stab at that one, and let it be canon, provided he does the job right(which I have good faith that he would).
But something like MegaMan x ProtoMan x Bass is just wrong on so many levels...
