Gadget... and the Gadgetinis?
Dec. 9th, 2003 08:15 amInteresting show. For once, I'm home early enough to see it. I think I read something about it in one of Wizard's cartoon previews from a few years ago, but hadn't seen an ep til today.
For starters, I thought they'd gotten Don Adams to play Gadget again, but since the credits went by too quickly, I didn't see for sure. TV Tome and IMDB say that it's actually a voice actor from Toronto named Maurice LaMarche, who has voiced Toucan Sam, The Brain from Animaniacs, Sleet from Sonic Underground(another I need to see), Six-Gun(Metroplex's tower-bot) from TransFormers G1, Dr. Quizzical from The Wonderful World of Ronald McDonald, and more. He does the job well, that's for sure. I hope to have a resume like that someday.
Also, I can't find a credit yet, but if that's not Frank Welker performing as Dr. Claw again(with a wicked new gauntlet, at that), then like Gadget, this guy does it perfectly.
So the idea in the show seems to be that Gadget has been promoted from Inspector to Lieutenant in an organization known as "WOMP"(World Organization of Mega Powers... why does it sound more like a villains' team?). Gone is the chief, replaced by Colonel Nozzaire, a French schmuck who either didn't know what he was getting into when Gadget was brought in, or never wanted him there in the first place.
Returning is Gadget's niece Penny, a bit older now it seems. Rather than being assisted by Brain, who seems to have been retired from duty, she has created a pair of chibi-Gadget clones called... eh, you figure it out. Their names are Fidget and Digit, and are amusing to watch. They look and sound like Gadget, but seem to be a bit smarter, though still entertaining.
Oh yeah, Mad Cat is back, too.
From what I can tell, the art is... not bad. Seems more streamlined than the original series, but not in a way that it's bad.
Anyway, it's good to see some new Gadget stuff(I still haven't seen the movies... it's on my "to-do list"... rather, the "to-do-when-everything-else-has-been-done" list. Like when I retire, or something.) If you like Gadget, give it a shot. It's different, without being overly so. More like a natural evolution of sorts.
