Don't really have time to read through all of this, so I'm throwing the question out there to anyone who can answer:

I thought the Nintendo DS had built-in WiFi? Is this required for online gaming, or only in certain instances?

Part of the site was blocked so I can't view it from work.

But it looks like this device is a Wireless access point.

The DS is a wireless device. But wireless devices need something else that's WIRELESS to connect to. If I understand correctly, this is going to be some manner of Nintendo branded Wireless access point, and will be beneficial only for people who don't have wireless networks in their homes already and thus do not have a wireless access point.

Ah, ok. So if I'm roaming around and near a hotspot, then I'm ok?

That's what I gather. I hadn't seen that forum thread, but I saw other articles about the device today. As the person above said, it's only for people who do not have access to some form of wireless access point.

If you have a wired connection at home, it's not like you can make the DS go from wireless to wired, so you need something like this. And if I'm not mistaken, isn't the Revolution supposed to be wireless-only as well?

So far as I can tell... that is correct.

Great! Now all I need is a WiFi compatible game... and a DS.

I believe the first game to use it will be Mario Kart, then Animal Crossing... I think this is just meant to allow your DS to play over the Internet, which current games weren't intended to do (since the network to support it isn't even up yet). Technically, all multiplayer DS games right now are WiFi, even if they don't use the Internet, right? I'm not totally sure on all of it...

This is only for online gaming, and only if you don't already have something else providing wireless for you to use.

Basically, this is something that you plug into your computer's USB port to allow your DS to use your comp's internet connection if you don't have a wireless network in your house already. So yes, if you're roaming and near a hotspot, theoretically, you should be able to use the DS online there.

It's interesting that Nintendo plans to release something like this. It'll only be a matter of time before it's hacked and used to mess with the DS's firmware. We might very well be seeing a DS mod community similar to to the one that exists around the PSP in the very near future.
