Can someone who's been following PS3 tell me if anything has been said about the possibility of it playing UMDs? I think it's pretty much been determined that the PSP and PS3 won't really interact in just such a way, but here's hoping.

Just sort of occurs to me that if PS3 could play PS2, PS1, AND PSP games, that'd solve a heap of my troubles in one fell swoop...

Yeah, it seems like the only way for UMD movies to not be inherently stupid. What I'm really waiting to see is Sony selling blank UMDs to move DVD movies onto.. except that would open them up for game piracy. Oy.

I've heard it looks good on a PSP screen, so I just wondered what sort of compression you'd need to fit an entire movie on a little UMD disc... My guess would be that it'd look great on a small screen, but immediately look terrible on a larger screen, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Not only should the PS3 be able to play UMD movies, but other devices not made by Sony should be able to as well. I say "should" in the sense of advisement rather than expectation.

Although I understand in the meantime that the UMD movie format is helping along sales of PSPs, I can only figure it'll eventually topple if more devices don't support them.

As far as I know, the PS3 is supposed to be able to play:

Blu Ray
DVD/Dual Layer DVD/DVD9
SACD
ACD
VCD
PS1
PS2 Blue
PS2 DVD
ADVD

And probably a few more, never heard about the UMD being playable or not.
