Sep. 7th, 2005 09:59 amOh, gawddammit...
So, Rockman goes "Pocket Fighter" style now...
And "Irregular Hunter X" as well? Double the above. I'm having a hard enough time getting a DS as it is, now I have to get a PSP? Fuck all. I was happier with Legends ports.
They ought to be putting these on the DS. Note I didn't say "instead," just that they're there. Argh.

Date: 2005-09-08 03:28 am (UTC)The analogy applies to X8 too. Insomuch as X8 was a vastly improved X game and overall pretty cool, it's competing against the Mega Man Anniversary Collection which is a vastly superior value.

But hey, that's just how it is with new vs. old. In the case of X8 vs. MMAC, that's PS2 graphics and sound vs. NES for the most part, and for some, that's all they need.

Date: 2005-09-08 03:29 pm (UTC)I hear the arcade emulation wasn't so hot for the arcade games, too, but I can't attest to that personally.
MMAC: Good value, but not really a good job.
'Sides which, I'm sure that if Capcom were really satisfied by it, they wouldn't be assuring better quality on MMXC and handling it in-house, rather than farming it out to those immature cradle-robbing hacks in the UK.

Date: 2005-09-09 03:00 am (UTC)- Some of the music doesn't play in the right stages in Navi Mode. Cloud Man's music is in Magnet Man's stage.
- When you beat a boss in Mega Man 3, the weapon filling sound effect is really loud.
- Some music is poorly compressed. The final battle theme in Mega Man 6 is one of the worst. The higher notes sound like static.
- Saving dialogues are mistimed or misplaced. For example, in the Doc Robot stages of Mega Man 3, the saving dialogue appears at a weird time. There's one game where it saves right in the middle of Dr. Wily's eyebrow tease.
- The time to get to the weapons select screen in Mega Man 8 is significantly longer than the original PSOne version.
- The screen transitions in Mega Man 8 are different.
- The Navi Mode boss energy meters on the whole are visually imperfect. They seem to shift up and down as they fill.
- Difficulty is fudged with in various levels (although, to be honest, Mega Man 7 is a lot more fun in MMAC than it was on the SNES cause Wily is much easier).
- Mega Man 7 is missing the Mode 7 ending effects (yet they use Mode 7 elsewhere in the game, so this is an odd omission).
- There's an odd slowdown in the transition between the boss posing sequence and the start of the level in Mega Man 7. Same when you defeat the boss and return to Dr. Light's lab.
- The Capcom logo movie serves as the "demo movie" and it kicks in any prolonged time you stop walking on the game/options/title screen. Why they don't have a real demo movie is beyond me.
- The voices in Mega Man 8 are sped up. Sword Man is the most obvious.
- Despite fixing various typos (Wily's "FAILD," Bass' "Damn"), the Navi Mode text is littered with horrible Engrish.
- They removed the Elec Beam trick (I don't care if it was a "hack," it didn't need fixing).
- Did Mega Man always fall down ladders after unpausing in Mega Man 3?
But a lot of these bugs I only notice because I know better. The collection itself is reasonably stable (I haven't gotten it to crash, despite playing entire multiple Mega Man games without rebooting), they fixed some minor bugs (typos, that funny graphical glitch in Mega Man 3's stage select), and I just don't these issues detract a whole lot. The most obnoxious of them is Mega Man 8's slow transition to the weapon select screen. It's not the absolute greatest job, but it's a respectable port at an exceptional value price.

Date: 2005-09-09 12:53 pm (UTC)I've little doubt MMXC will put it to shame.
They claimed shortage of space on things, yet they made sure to include their credits, as an unlockable no less, as well as that cheap-looking Capcom bit with Guts Man.
Also, I've just heard of really random bugs. Like in MM2, personally, when I was in part 2 of Dr. Wily's stage going over the spike pit with the jet sled, for no reason the thing just disappeared on me halfway, causing me to die and have to rebuild my energy supply for it.
Like I've always said, as a collection, it seems to do the job, almost to a "just enough" level, but as an anniversary collection, I feel they cheaped out on it.
