There IS a precedent to this, mind. Many japanese mecha designs have insane levels of detail on them.. I'd have to hunt some down to judge which is worse though..

..Looked into it; The BinalTech design sketches (as well as the early Diaclone and TF Cartoon sketches) are probably what he's shooting for.. but they don't have -any- of that excess plating..

Too much of anything can be bad. Much of it is lost in the colors, and to top that off, it looks mostly like lines just for the sake of it.

After a while it's all either lost in the final product, distracting or entirely pointless..

I dunno about the cracks and damage thing, but not everyone pumped up the detail per drawing. XD; Just a few. Plus, usually the artists were bugged by editors (aka Rog and some other people) to "punch it up".

....though that Hasbro-tm'd progression is.... distressing, to say the least. XD;;;; holy crap
