I have found sanctuary in this frigid wasteland known as Canada... wait, maybe that's a bit harsh. Let me try again:

I have found sanctuary in this cold, bitter, southern food-less hell hole known as Canada. And the owner of that sanctuary is named Popeye.

See, growing up in NC, I usually was never at a lose for spicy chicken, cajun food, and most of all, biscuits. And while I've found one solution for biscuits thanks to the Pillsbury Dough-Boy(whose biscuits are just like Grandma used to make... and that makes me suspicious...), they were adequate. Yeah, they're biscuits, technically, and perhaps closer than most anything else I've had offered to me here to date(they also call some cookies "biscuits", so what do they know?). But now, I have found Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits.

Not only do they have buttermilk biscuits(tastes better than it sounds, much), but they taste like Bojangle's biscuits at that, which are faves. They also have "cajun rice", which I've yet to try, but hope it's like BoJ's "dirty rice"(cajun rice with some pepper and sausage in it). Their chicken isn't bad, either. I still prefer Colonel Sanders' herbs and spices, but for some reason, THAT SON OF A BITCH LEFT HALF HIS MENU IN THE US OF FRIGGIN' A!!!

The fries aren't bad, but I can get the same thing at Arby's with the curlies. They have some other stuff, including fish, popcorn shrimp, and varieties of chicken. But the biscuits are the thing.

Y'HEAR THAT, SANDERS?! SOMEONE ELSE REALLY IS DOING CHICKEN RIGHT! WITH BISCUITS, DAMMIT!!!

KFCs here are a hell of a thing. The chicken is about the same, but after that, it's really different from the US stuff. For starters- the very start- they deliver here. Bonus points. As mentioned, there are no biscuits. There are also no potato wedges, mac & cheese, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes(yet they have gravy... more on that in a minute), BBQ baked beans, green beans, and the sandwich menu is pretty much entirely different. They still have the Crispy Strip sandwich, but their strips here are different. So that doesn't count... well, ok. Half points for that one. But I miss the Tender Roast sandwich.

One BIG bonus... popcorn chicken. Not for a limited time here, folks. When visiting for the wedding, Aspect once said "I'm going to go in there and order a bucket of popcorn chicken. And they'll be like 'But sir...', and I'll be like 'I said a BUCKET of popcorn chicken!'"

An odd thing at places up here. The sauces are different. I think most places "BBQ" sauce tastes like ketchup mixed with taco sauce. But at least McDonald's has gone to the USA recipe. And they brought in Hot Mustard, another fave of mine from back home. At least, I don't recall them ever listing it when asking what they had...

Fortunately, at a place like KFC, you do have alternatives. Like gravy. That's chiefly used for poutine, but it goes with fries and chicken in a cinch. That they do not also have mashed potatoes and biscuits for it, however, is a tragedy unto itself.

Poutine. That's a favorite thing about Canada. It's french fries(any kind will do), with these lumps of white cheese dumped on top, and hot gravy poured over it, melting the cheese into the crevices. It's everything your mother warned you about, and it makes a decent meal in itself, too. I just wonder how it would taste with potato wedges instead of fries...

Speaking of fries, not only does KFC have those here instead of half the side order menu(rounded out by coleslaw, potato salad, and macaroni salad), but Taco Bell(another PepsiCo-owned restaurant) has them as well. Ever had Fries Supreme before? It's basically like a Taco Supreme or Nacho Supreme, I believe, just with a different starch included.

And I think that covers just about everything. Man, I talk alot, don't I? This was not meant to be anywhere near this long...

Oh, one last bit of irony before I go: looking up the KFC website to fill in the gaps in my memory, seems that many countries have their own KFC websites. Canada not being one of them. Hell, I'd think they'd have one so they wouldn't go to the US site and say "WTF? This is nothing like we have! We're getting screwed!"

When you guys come down for Otakon, you can pig out at KFC all you want.

Though I imagine Canada is a nice reprieve for your arteries. ;P

Which reminds me, I still haven't gotten any reply on that room...

*chuckles* I rather dislike Popeye Chicken. Despite the fact that I'm not the most healthy eater in the world, I'm not big on fast food. But I will agree that the Biscuits are really damn good.

Folks who call cookies "biscuits" really bother me... I always wonder what they call the things that we know as biscuits...

Homemade buttermilk biscuits are teh rox... *droool* I might have to do some baking...
