Just got home after receiving "da' hook up" at EB Games and giving MegaMan X7 a go. Played up to the stage select.
First, the good news. It's better than X6. And all in all, it IS a good game. As some say, nothing super stellar; I wouldn't put it over Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, but there are few that I would.
Voices: Zero's grown on me a bit. And he does seem to show some emotion, namely when he's calling after Axl when he bails. Axl is alright as a kid; I have no real complaints. Alia is good, sexy good. Some compare her voice to Roll Casket, but I think she sounds a tad bit older... but then again, when was Legends 2 made...?
Red(leader of Red Alert, not leader of the Regal Dragons) has a good voice, and sticks it to the retired X. Signas sounds interesting... in a good way, mind. And then there's X... it's not good, it's not bad, it's really just sort of... there. In my opinion, I'd make a better X... I should find out how to try for that.
The booklet is black and white, with a decent card-stock type cover. Errors are fairly minimal, the chief one being the frequent use of "Irregular Hunters", which is thankfully avoided in the game proper.
Also, looks like the rumors of the Hunters not using units anymore may not be true; good. Considering the RPG and all...
Speaking of which, the intro(narrated in English, not in Japanese; btw, it's true, there IS language select) mentions that thanks to the Reploids, even the most heavily damaged areas of the planet(which looks as it should, not the washed-out Maverick Zero version in X5) are well on the way to recovery... also good, for the RPG.
My biggest problem so far is getting Axl's Copy Shot to work. Seems to never work the way I want it to... maybe I'm missing something?
Auto-targetting isn't so bad. In 3-D, you can move from enemy to enemy via R2, sorta like in Legends 2. Not sure exactly how it works in 2-D, but it's not so bad. I think it goes for the closest enemy to you...
Took me a bit to learn to hover with Axl; it works differently than X's in X4.
Also, seems wall-climbing in 3-D is a no-go. Dang. Maybe next time...
Oh yeah, they removed the cigar from the mobster in the intro sequence... sort of. From a distance, it just seems ALOT shorter, but in close-ups, it's not there. But to be fair, I can't remember if he lost it while running for his life or not originally, so...
Interesting tidbit: on the ranking/continue screen, seems they pulled Alia's pic right out of X6.
Anyways, it IS a good game, despite what nimrod magazines tend to say about it. Can't wait to actually own it(and a PS2, 219 used :P )...
Oh yeah, and Scramble Change rocks.

Questions!
Date: 2003-10-17 04:02 am (UTC)2. Is X playable at the beginning!
3. Is the 3D real 3D or is it 3D platformer 3D? (sprites and bg are 3D but the camera is almost always in the platformer position.)
Re: Questions!
Date: 2003-10-17 05:01 am (UTC)2) Only if you beat the game first.
3) Um... 3-D is real to me... you can even adjust the camera in some parts...

Date: 2003-10-17 04:18 am (UTC)I haven't touched the english dub track yet, mostly because the original Japanese is so beautifully done (ESPECIALLY Axl!) The controls took a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's downright fun. My only gripe is that they tend to run too slow. >.> but then again you have a dash button, so...:P Axl's hover feature comes in great help at a lot of points...I'm mostly down to just using Axl and X now as my two characters.
The character-swapping mid play is -awsome-, and works smoothly. I was worried that it would lag or make the gameplay choppy, but it does neither of which. The only problem I've encountered so far is some serious game lagging when versing Hellride with Axl. >.>;; *twitches*
I also like the fact that they introduce bits of the storyline between EVERY boss battle, so with each of the 8 you defeat a bit more of the plot unfolds. It's so nice to not have to beat half or all of them just to get anywhere in the game...that always drove me insane.
Overall, it's a great game! The camera has a few of its quirks, but it's nothing really marring. The graphics are gorgeous and bright, full of pretty eye candy. All around a good time. ^_^
