Aug. 11th, 2005 04:23 pmIt's funny to hear Nintendo garnering such strong support at retail, especially from the likes of EB Games.
This might be a part of why.
Or maybe it's just the DS + 2 games for $199 special they have going on.
Nonetheless, yesterday, it was good to be able to talk about DS in a positive light without PSP creeping into the conversation...
So far, the only things I care about on PSP are DarkStalkers and Rockman DASH. And not very strongly, though the thought of DASH on DS(I wonder if they'd consider calling it "MegaMan DASH" for it for obvious reasons, knowing the way developers are naming these things now) is a rather appealing idea to me.
Would it be a simple port? No doubt. Though I'd like to think maybe there'd be some extra stylus-based mini-games... maybe involving Servbots.
I think for a lot of people, that would =win. One can hope...

Date: 2005-08-11 08:40 pm (UTC)That DS + games deal sounds pretty nice! Is that in Canadian dollars or USD? If it's USD, you'd be saving at least $10... More if the games cost over $30 each.

Date: 2005-08-11 09:59 pm (UTC)That fellow actually said that? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Since when was handheld gaming ever considered to be in a "ghetto"? Did other people ever think that way? Purely ridiculous...
I understand when these kinds of ventures are starting, you have to speak of them confidently even though you don't know how it's going to do. If you just say "Uhm, well, we hope it does alright" then people aren't going to invest in. But there's a relatively fine line between exuding confidence and exuding nonsense.

Date: 2005-08-12 07:32 pm (UTC)n. pl. ghet·tos or ghet·toes
A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure.
An often walled quarter in a European city to which Jews were restricted beginning in the Middle Ages.
Something that resembles the restriction or isolation of a city ghetto: “trapped in ethnic or pink-collar managerial job ghettoes” (Diane Weathers)."
Knowing the entire meaning of ghetto would actually help you.
What he's talking about is making the handheld market mainstream, instead of gamer-only as it is now.

Date: 2005-08-12 08:03 pm (UTC)Despite that, his comment still lacks sense. Gaming is a hobby, and does not reflect a specific type of person (except perhaps economically). Sure gamers (i.e. game hobbyists) are a minority compared to, say, the human race, and so it's not illogical that handheld gaming devices are marketed toward them. But if a person wants a handheld device that plays music or movies, that's not an issue since those products already exist. So how is the handheld market not mainstream already when there are currently existing handheld electronics to suit a variety of needs?
Yes, I do recognize that a single device which can perform multiple functions is convenient, cost-wise at the very least (well, that might be arguable, but it's not my concern here). Despite that, I'm unaware of any notably high demand of gaming devices which could do things other than gaming before the PSP came to be. So even if the handheld gaming market were in a "ghetto," would that even be a bad thing? I have to imagine Kaz thinks so, otherwise saying it wouldn't bolster the PSP any bit.
But be sensible. When people say ghetto it generally connotates the idea of a slum, or an otherwise lower standard living district. Not everyone goes to dictionary.com before they say something.

Date: 2005-08-13 01:15 am (UTC)The Handheld market is not mainstream, not everoyne who's unrelated to gaming owns a console, and Sony, with the PSP did a HUGE step into making handhelds as mainstream as cellphones.
It's not about the PSP playing shit other than games, and the only ones I've seen bothered with that, are Nintendo fans, insecurities maybe.
It's about the game range, and giving EVERYONE something of interested, instead of just the hardcore nerds and kids Nintendo would attract. Sony has done a lot for the casual gamers, while Nintendo has been retreating to the kids market, and the loyal fanboys, which is what Hirai calls the "Ghetto", simply because it's a rather small niche.

Date: 2005-08-12 07:00 am (UTC)Megaman Legends is actually a pretty strong draw for getting a PSP for me, if it ever comes to the US. More so if Misadventures comes out. But yeah, MML on the DS would rock. What I find funny, is that I'm looking forward to getting a DS than pretty much all the next gen systems.
