And it's time for a change!(R.I.P. Owen)

This crap has gone on for long enough. For some reason, some program neither Red nor I remember called "Symantec" is analyzing all these e-mails we're allegedly sending, scanning them just out of nowhere. And sometimes it gets INSANE. Like THIS insane...

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. There's actually a SCROLL BAR on the TOOLBAR! THAT is how many this thing will do at a time, nonstop. I decided to do a printscreen in case anyone is familiar with this phenomenon. Normally, it's relatively non-troublesome; maybe one or two pop up in several hours. But NOTHING seems able to turn it off. It only stopped when I disconnected from the internet for a moment. And as I'm sure many of you know, such action is not always a favorable option.

So I'm open to ideas here. What the bloody hell are we supposed to do?

You know, I think that's the email scanning function of Norton Antivirus. I saw that you had it running in the system tray...

Crap. There a way to disable that? The function, that is?

Yeah, you should be able to click the icon in the system tray to open Norton Antivirus, then click the Options button. Then a new window should pop up, and somewhere there should be an "Internet" menu with "E-Mail" under it. You should be able to set your options there, and I guess you want to disable it when sending e-mail?

But I dunno if that is the real problem. How are you supposedly sending so many e-mails at once? Do they show in your sent e-mails folder?

You should check the options of Outlook Express, which I assume you're using. Check the Security tab, and there should be a checkbox that says "Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me." I dunno if that'll really help, but something weird is definitely going on there.

I'll give it a shot later, but the weird thing is, my Outlook box no longer works; my MegaMan Network address is null and void now... so I don't/can't use it anymore...

Perhaps you should use Norton to scan your whole computer. Do you update it often?

I don't update it at all; Red's the one who usually handles that stuff.

OK. That's Norton Antivirus, scanning all the email that you send out.

If that's not you sending all of those emails (23 of them?) then you have a virus. Probably Sobig F or one of those. This is not a "maybe you do" thing, you definately have one.

So, you need to update your virus definitions and do a full system scan. Don't wait, these fuckers are nasty if left to breed, and anybody else without protection is going to get the same problem whether you know it or not.

So here's what you do: Find the 'Symantec' (or Norton Antivirus) folder in your start menu, and run the 'LiveUpdate' program that's in there. That will wisen up your antivirus so that it knows about all the new viruses that have come out since you installed the program. Then, you need to run a full system scan. The sooner, the better.

Dollars to doughnuts says you have a virus on that machine.
