Hi. You don't know me; I saw your post while browsing maryc's friends list.
I take it that you're hosting the site yourself on a DSL or cable connection? You might want to try this: 1/ take the site down immediately; 2/ install a throttling web server such as thttpd (http://www.acme.com/software/thttpd/) that allows you to restrict the amount of bandwidth used for web content. You don't have to replace your existing server (Apache/IIS/whatever) with the new one; you can set the new one to listen on, say, port 81 instead of 80; 3/ alter the site so that big files (images, Flash files, MP3s, whatever) are served using the throttling server instead of the main one.
This is what I do with my photos, PDFs and stuff. They're not heavily downloaded, but by restricting the amount of bandwidth available to the web server, my bandwidth never gets completely chewed up whenever people are viewing them.
Actually, we've got hosting, on whatever's got 8-Bit Theater, if I'm not mistaken.
That, and "we" is sort of a misnomer. I don't really know how she's got things set up, or if this is even a real problem yet, but I'll mention this post to her so she can take action.
Hey, some people spend their lives wishing they had publicity like this. Red may not care so much after being Slashdotted multiple times, but still. Ride it like a bitch, dude.
I wonder if there's enough bandwidth to handle that. Then again, these hosts aren't the brightest around -- they didn't seem to care that bills from December didn't get paid for a few months, even though subsequent bills did.
