PS3 graphics chip unfinished – E3 demos under suspicion

Marv Burkett, nVidia's Chief Financial Officer, has revealed that the RSX chip, due to power the PS3 is currently unfinished. The chip is not due to be available to anyone until September. Which means the stunning visuals shown at E3 could not have been created on one, casting doubt on the validity of Sony claims that the visuals were real PS3 in-game footage. Burkett has commented that the visuals had been created on current nVidia hardware of roughly the same power as the RSX. That still casts some doubts on the PS3's barn-storming E3 presence, and particularly whether much of the footage (as it appeared to be) was done, at best, using the game engine to create cut-scenes, or whether it was really realtime, in-game footage.

This is unsurprising.

Reminds me of how Microsoft was using photoshopped game screens a while back. I guess it shows that at least Sony's learning from the competition.

nothing was in-game. sony was very up-front about this in interviews. all of those were done to-spec, meaning they were done on computers, but stayed true to what the PS3's specs were.

They were up-front about it? Where was this?

when ever the media asked them, they always replied that things were done to spec, no one from sony ever said it was on actual PS3 hardware.

of course, they did say a few things were done to spec that actually werent. the gundam trailer is full CG, for instance. Killzone 2's trailer was done to spec though.

Then the media is largely at fault with this one. Much of what I've read about the PS3 'demos' at E3 (which isn't a lot, mind you) claim it's all "actual gameplay."

Do you know where Killzone 2 was shown to be to-spec? Media seems to claim otherwise.

Anyway, XBox 360 was done to-spec (less than to-spec, to tell the truth, they used a computer with power less than the announced 360 specs). The problem with claiming the PS3 was done "to-spec" is that, as the article states, their graphics chip is unfinished. This makes any to-spec claims they make purely speculative, since they aren't yet certain what their specs will be. and they only used the term to-spec once they had been called on their use of CG movies, (IMO) as a way of salvaging some of their pride.

developers have had full info on the PS3's specs since late february.

they know what that chip is going to be capable of, so they can definately create things "to-spec"

Knowing what something is supposedly going to be capable of, and knowing what it is capable of, are two very different things when it comes to Sony.

Unless, of course, you're still waiting for Toy Story or the FF8 dance scene to be rendered in real-time on the PS2.
