May. 30th, 2005 07:31 pmHmm, first, fanfiction.net seems to gain a lot of ire from people regarding new and added policies.
Now, Deviant Art is attracting similar ire from its clientele via its varying policies, such as their interpretation of fair-use.
I get the feeling these sites are getting too big, almost "too official," in a manner of speaking.
Sort of like how if you go to an official site for a game or toyline or whatever, you may find some cool stuff, but compared to a fansite? Worlds apart.
I wonder if maybe a "second coming" of fan-run fanfiction archives and fanart archives may not be at hand. Or should be.

Date: 2005-05-30 05:10 pm (UTC)Their idea of 'fair use' is far too lenient, and I suspect the cause of this is that the site got too damned big for its panties.
Now, if the DA folk were to do the responsible thing and hire on effective, responsible administrators and moderators, tighten up their policy so it does not contradict/allow violation of American copyright law (they run from the states ergo they better abide by US law), and stop trying to present such a disorganised site as 'professional' until it actually WAS...
I knwo you're not accusing the users of FFnet and Da of being whiners. My reasons for leaving are obvious: I think their notion of 'fair use' would never hold up in a court of law and I think they are encouraging the BS notion that art online = free clipart.
Yes, by putting your work out in ANY arena, be it digtal or analogue, you open yourself up to filching.
However, that doesn't mean that the filching is justified.
Someday, DA is going to find itself with a lawsuit up the arse and no one to cry to. Either that or it'll collapse under its own bloat.
I'm not positing that running a large archive site is an easy process. However, if they took more care in hiring moderators instead of just picking whoever goes 'ooh ohh ohh me me me' the most, it would be an EASIER process.
DA is poorly run, poorly moderated, and poorly designed to boot. A professional art site it is not, and it has no business calling itself that.
*whew*
Sorry about wanking all over your LJ. I know you are not OMG TEH ENEMYYYY, and are indeed a most reasonable sort.
Just had to explain my position a bit.
And this?
I wonder if maybe a "second coming" of fan-run fanfiction archives and fanart archives may not be at hand. Or should be.
YES, YES, YES.

Date: 2005-05-30 06:29 pm (UTC)Not that this really affects me in any great way, I'm on neither except ff.net to avoid pop-ups and keep track of some favorites. No work of mine is on there, though.
