lbd_nytetrayn: Star Force Dragonzord Power! (Default)
[personal profile] lbd_nytetrayn
Fuck, fuck, mother mother fuck.

Just got home from doing inventory tonight at BBV. Wish I'd never gone in.

Towards the end, I wanted to do a quick little run on Star Fox Assault, which we just got in and I put in the system for tomorrow before shutting it off. I'm told no dice, and I had to calm myself from going into a tirade.

See, this is after I'd been informed about what had gone on beforehand. See, last Friday, Red and I were informed that this Saturday, the 19th, that her parents were making reservations at some fancy-schmancy restaurant. Italian, IIRC. I found only one person I was able to switch with on the schedule, who wasn't working that night.

Yesterday, however, I find out when she calls me that she didn't realize it would be a "Game Guru" shift, which would be a problem because she doesn't know a PlayStation from an XBox. I call the MOD(Manager On Duty), who gives another worker a call who could do a Game Guru shift. He's cool with doing it, and for her to take his shift, while I take her earlier shift.

Apparently, as I found out earlier, "triple-switches" or somesuch, aren't supposed to be allowed. I'm not in any trouble or anything for it, but it's something to keep aware of for next time. Actually, I think he said that if it had to be done, to ask an MOD... and it was the MOD's idea in the first place.

Go figure.

Anyway, things are cool now, but part of the reason on this is that Game Guru is considered specialized, and needs someone knowledgable out there doing this stuff(my logic beforehand was that I really don't know much about movies, yet I'm sent out onto that floor all the time). He did bring up the point I work in a video store, and rather than argue the point that, as I recall, I was hired more on my game expertise, I just let it go. I'm not TOO unknowledgable of movies, after all, I just don't get to watch them nearly enough. I can probably give a short resume' for Hideo Kojima, but Bruckheimer? He's a director or something, right? Did I even spell his name right?

So what's the point of all this? As I said, I was interested in playing a little Star Fox Assault while I wasn't really doing anything. We got the game late, technically, as Blockbuster was supposed to have the game on the first of the month, two weeks before its official launch. We aren't allowed to rent anything for about three weeks after the release date, for free, anyway. We can pay, sure...

So what this boils down to, is that as the Blockbuster Video Game Rush's "Game Guru," a specialized position based on familiarity and knowledge of games, I'm supposed to inform people about a game I've never gotten a chance to play.

I guess I'll just try to recite 1up.com's rather scathing review when anyone asks. I don't see how this will help rentals/sales, though. Feel like I'm a breeding dog who's had his balls snipped off; not a lot of good at what's expected of him, for reasons beyond his control due to those above him.

On to another part of my night...

Before work, I return a couple of games I'd been renting with the systems, as well as a couple of movies. Apparently, this could be viewed as a bad move on my part. See, when the manager checked my stuff in, and re-checked out "Without a Paddle" to me(which might've been where the problem came from), he saw that I had a charge of, I believe, $57.03 on my account. This of course, is because I wasted no time enacting my master plan of holding onto my rented PlayStation 2 console past the 7-day mark. Incidently, he knew I was going to try this, wherein I'd get the system for that price. He advised against it, but I was willing to face whatever consequences came my way, as I was acting within the rules and within the law. Apparently, though, that's not good enough now. Even though we manage to rent out all the systems over a holiday(so I'm told), seems we usually rent them pretty sparsely the rest of the time. Anyway, he wants me to bring the system back. Which frankly bugs me.

There's also the XBox which I've held for only a smidge shorter a time.

So, I guess it's back to the original plan, where I just keep renting the same systems out week after week.

Still, I'm saddened... I've had that PS2 checked out for so long, I feel like it's mine. You know, that sort of attachment you have to a system after having it for so long? It's like that.

Same deal for the XBox... all my save data is on the hard drive.

Calculating things out, it's about 25 dollars plus tax to rent a system. Which I can do for free. 50 dollars plus tax is the price you pay if you decide to keep a system. So we're looking at about 85 dollars(Canadian, mind) for a system, if I'm not mistaken. More than I'd like to pay, considering, but still pretty damned good overall. So both systems would run me about 170 dollars, still less than the Canuck-buck value of a slimmed-down PS2.

So now I have to ponder exactly how to go about this. That's still 70 more dollars over an already considerable amount of cash... yeah, we're doing better these days, but THAT much better, I'm not sure.

As for payment, I suppose using my credit card and paying off the bill over a period of time would help lighten our burden. But I'm loathe to use it for anything short of eBay. And even then, only because I have to establish a credit rating if I'm going to be able to apply for a Sears card, which is the only way I can convert my Petro Points(points gained for buying gas and shit at Petro Canada, can be redeemed for stuff) into Sears Points, which would allow me to essentially get free TransFormers for filling up my tank.

If not for all that, I'd probably have cut it in two or buried it somewhere. So I'd rather stick to small eBay purchases, if I can help it.

Also, if I did it the legit paying customer way, my name would still be attached to it. I'm not sure that'd bode well with the boss if he caught it. So ideally, I'd need someone else to rent my systems out, so that I could pay them back somehow.

Sigh. What a load. I personally feel that having the systems would help me in my job, as well as Red in her freelancing for 1UP.

So, in the meantime, I guess I keep doing what I've been doing, and rent them for free. Still, it's annoying to haul them in each week, I'd rather just be able to pay for them and keep the damn things. I suppose I can just do it until the company doesn't want them anymore... might get them cheaper that way.

I don't know. :P

But, at least I've got my health, among other things. Like a cat that won't stop meowing... 9_9

And finally, I forgot to get the district manager's number before I left tonight, hopefully tomorrow. See, this is the third burn of the night...

These are what we call "Coca-Cola Bears," or "Coke Bears" for short. There are 6 different ones each depicting different events, remnants of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The Coke can you see on the left is the size of an actual Coke can, made of metal, the works; I surprised Red with the set for Christmas(she likes bears, see) by putting them in the fridge in their cans for her to find when I asked her to grab me a Coke after work. The bear is completely removable, as you can see in the middle, or just leave them peeking out as seen on the right.

They were originally $4.99 each, Canadian, now they've been at $2.49 each for awhile. I noticed tonight that they were missing from above the Coke cooler at work. They'd been selling pretty well after the markdown, but we still had some left.

So I ask what happened to them.

"Field destroyed," I'm told, a term for something taken out of inventory that'll be, eventually, destroyed. Usually done to coupons or old candy or somesuch.

Now this, I cannot let stand. Earlier in this same night, Red and I were voicing to each other our disgust for the policies regarding food in fast food places. God knows, there are people who could use that stuff. 10, 15 minutes unsold may not do for a paying client or customer, but I'm sure the people who forage through trash cans for last night's uneaten leftovers certainly wouldn't have a problem with it.

Now, in this case, I don't know if growing up watching stuff from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer to Toy Story has had some effect on me, or if it's just my natural love of toys, but I CAN NOT STAND to see a good toy simply thrown out. Once, when I worked at Toys R Us, I saw a kid who returned a TransFormers Armada Red Alert toy who apparently wasn't working right? The problem? One of the front hinges on his chest/truck grill wouldn't open when a Mini-con was plugged into it. Otherwise, perfectly fine.

And they threw it out. They wouldn't let me have it. They didn't add it to a pile for a kid who might enjoy it(I forget the reasoning, but I think something along the lines of "TRU giving away broken toys to needy kids" not helping the public image), they didn't give employees a grab at it, nothing. Just straight in the trash. I've heard the same thing being done with games and other stuff.

Red's seen clothes at work when she was at Yorkdale being thrown out, slashed up so no one could/would wear them. Charity? Fuck no, where's the profit in that? I guess the idea is that "if we can't gain anything from this, no one will."

Food, I can halfway understand. Nowadays, it might be considered unhealthy or whatever, could make someone sick, etc.

I'm not in the food industry, I work at a video store. A video store that, across the country, I'm sure, is going to destroy a ton of perfectly good toy Coke Bears.

I will not stand for this. I can not stand for this. As an employee, generally speaking, BBV is a good place to work. As a customer, I somewhat loathe the place. It's a shame that my employee discount is only good at BBV.

But, I digress. I'm not going to take this sitting down... I'm going as far as I need to into this company to save those damned bears from destruction, and try and get them into some the hands of some kids who might not have anything better than that. Our landfills and such don't need this crap, not from such a terrible waste such as this. We probably could've even eventually given them out to kids who came in or something, like with a Children's movie rental or somesuch, but no. "Field destroyed."

Fortunately, the bears aren't gone yet. They're sitting on a shelf, awaiting their unfortunate fate. In the meantime, starting today, I'm going to do what I can to see that they don't reach that fate. And hopefully, it'll go beyond my own home store or district. But I'll go as far through these corporate numbskulls as I have to go to see that what's right is done.

For the food part, I could make an argument about how it's better to throw it out than to keep it. Trust me, if you saw what we did to fast food to make it look good/last that long. Take them out of the heat and let them get cold, and no one in their right mind would want to touch them. McNuggets, for example, melt. That's the only way I can think to describe it. Not pretty.

On the other hand, I simply cannot understand destroying good stuff.

Eh, I've worked in fast food, and even kept leftover McNuggets in the fridge...

I'm just a tad confused as to why, exactly, you can't "purchase" the system through the whole "end of late fees" thing. That doesn't make any sense to me, especially if your store doesn't rent the systems a lot outside of the holiday season.

So am I. Apparently, the thought is that BBV doesn't want employees buying systems for cheap. I'm rather sure it would not be a problem...

Hell, if they priced their GameCubes to the same as everyone else, even less so.

I'm not up on the current exchange rate, but even US$85 is fairly cheap for a used system. From a business standpoint, I guess I can understand it, but you were basically given the old bait-and-switch -- advised against it, but you weren't told you couldn't do it. That's not terribly good from a PR standpoint, since some people would call that a reason to no longer give that company their business.

Makes me wonder what'd be said to a customer in this instance...

That's a very good question. I looked through one of the little informatonal booklets, and it didn't seem to even make mention of game systems.

It seems to be mostly a "don't ask, don't tell" kind of thing for the specifics... of course, if someone asks, then we pretty much have to spill it, but we aren't really supposed to volunteer the info. Not even about there being a seven-day grace period.

"If you need an extra day or two, go right ahead" is pretty much what's said.

The booklet I flipped through stated pretty clearly that there's a six-day period after the due date that something can be returned before a charge is rendered.

Yep, in the booklet. We're not supposed to voluntarily say it, though.

BBV seems to have faith that customers won't read those pamplets, and that they won't likely keep the movies they rent, for the most part.

I'd bet real money the reason they don't want you voluntarily mentioning it is because of the Movie Pass and Game Pass.

...aren't those the things where you pay a flat rate and get unlimited rentals for a month or so? Before my time, heard about them, but those have long since been done away with, at least here.

Yes, that's what they are. The BBV stores here are promoting the Passes and TEOLF side-by-side.

Heh, not here... wow. What a difference. Then again, I hear they're losing more money in the States than here. No small wonder why to me...

Our competition, Rogers Video, is running ads with some lady complaining to Rogers Video that the "other" place doesn't have anything in stock, and has some new promotion going on that she doesn't understand(moron), and then they plug some two new releases for 6.99 or somesuch.

...crap. I'm tired as hell and just got back from taking Red to work, and accidently clicked "Parent" when I was trying to click "Reply to this." What's that do, anyway? Nothing important, I hope...

Anyway, what I was going to say there was that I know how that is... I remember this one lady kicking up what seemed to be a huge fuss over having to pay a late charge after "No More Late Fees" went into effect.

I wish I'd had her. I'd have told her, "the new policy is no MORE late fees... the ones you already gathered still stick around until you pay them. But there are no MORE after that."

Ah well.

And there's always the restocking fee if you return something after the grace period has ended.

It shouldn't be too high. They actually have the restocking fee posted at the one here, and it's only something like US$2 for games and movies.

Clicking 'Parent' under a comment just shows the original journal entry, that particular comment, and the replies people have given to that comment. It's the same thing as 'Thread,' but that shows the original comment someone made to the entry, then all of the replies to that comment, but not the other comments on the entry.
If all/any of that makes any sense. I suck at explaining these things.

Just hitting the back button can return it to normal. :3

Boy, I can't wait to try and get a job.

Toy abuse ain't cool. Policies vary from store to store, sometimes unsold stock goes to a close out store like Big Lots or a dollar store.

why so worried about the PS2?

Next week? Cool. But I worry because Sony's notorious for making cheap systems, and I'd like to have a back-up, especially since the slim one's fan doesn't work right.

As we discussed, though, Red adores the slimmed-down one, so swapping out isn't really an option. ;P
