Homophobe? Hardly...

...though I don't know where this falls.
So, a lot of shit has been slung lately around MMN, and once again we're generalized as the scum of the MM community. But, I guess considering how much people hate Capcom, the creators of the damned thing, it's a sign we're doing good for ourselves.
Though in some ways I think some of the shit slung may have been deserved, I don't think that this went anywhere near well. And with so much of it deleted, fuck it. What's done is done.
Having said that, Reeve, Tim, and I had a bit of a discussion over this, now that Reeve is back. And we pretty much had the same thoughts. Those being, we've come a long way since we set foot on this great place we call the internet. Since we started, we've forged relationships with folks at Viz, Ruby-Spears, Jazwares, Artbox, Decipher, ShoPro, Udon, the late Dreamwave, even Capcom themselves, and more.
Not saying we're above anyone, not at all. However, as The Mega Man Network is the first Mega Man site that comes up on a Yahoo search(barring a couple of technicalities, such as the name), we are rather in the public eye, in a rather large way.
Now, couple that with what can only be described as a volatile, controversial atmosphere that comes up in many places nowadays at the mere mention of same-sex relations. It creates a topic, an environment none of the above companies would likely tread upon. Hell, in some cases, heterosexual pairings might even be much to ask.
Between The Mega Man Network and Planet Mega Man, we manage to get away with a lot. With the fandom as a whole, we get away with a whole lot more, considering some creators won't even allow fanfiction of their properties. Fortunately, Capcom is willing to turn a blind eye to much of this, provided, quote:
"...it is not offensive or slanderous towards Capcom, our products, or employees or any other third party."
Now, what counts as "offensive" varies from person to person, and unfortunately, in America, homosexuality is a really big, swirly grey area that most prefer not to touch on. And in this case, it's a stance we prefer to take, particularly on a franchise whose biggest relationships seem to be Tron/MegaMan, Layer/Zero, and Mayl/Lan. And let's face it, those are all pretty flimsy as-is.
And as much as I'd like to make a case for Sal/Miyu in the EXE anime, I doubt there really is anything there.
Now, unfortunately, as noted, we are in a rather public position, with a lot of eyes on us, officially and unofficially. The last thing we need is some soccer mom catching her kid pulling up X and Zero about to duel sabers on MMN. Granted, we could tell them to go screw, and they could conceivably do just that. I imagine some complaints to Capcom(laugh all you want, it could happen in this day and age, it wouldn't be the first such instance), and they could be down on us like a ton of bricks, shutting everything down.
Realistically, in the name of a pic of a relationship that probably has no basis, it's just not worth it.
Now, I don't agree with how part of it were handled(including the use of a term I won't repeat here, we all know it by now), but I do believe that I've come to a worthwhile re-evaluation of the contest that has been agreed upon by myself, Reeve, Tim, and the contest's originator, Iris.
In essence, we're taking the grade school route here, as it seems like the only real way to go. So no really intimate stuff is for the contest. No kissing, no holding hands. Hugging is ok(granted, it's usually the other way around at a school dance for hugging and holding hands). Any gender/character pairing is allowed here, but physical intimacy is to be kept at a bare minimum.
So basically, this allows for whoever you want, all nice and friendly-like, and we can just leave it to interpretation.
X gives Axl a valentine. Could be love, could be admiration, could be because Signas said that if he gives one to everyone else in the base, Axl has to get one, too.
If people are going to use their imagination on every other aspect of this stuff, then let's use it here, ok? And if not, then go to 4chan or something.
Now, can we just all get along already?

Date: 2005-01-16 11:38 pm (UTC)And, no offence, but I think this is being taken way too seriously. But banning all pairings or whatever seems like the wise move, in any case. However, I don't think Capcom could actually shut you down. They might be able to do some damage, but nothing drastic.
Your board resembles our society too much: nations of fags without discipline, where the leaders are afraid of punishing the unruly types because they may look bad.

They have the rights that the owner of the board decides that they may enjoy, which is always subject to change. On any board I ran or helped run, if they tried colouring outside THEM LINES, they got a nice stick across the face.

Anyway, in this instance, to me, this is akin to saying "no interracial couples," which to me is just... well, there's intolerant, and there's asshole, and I think this errs a little more towards the latter.
And frankly, I'm treating this idea the same way I do IRL relations. Do what you want, but keep it tasteful. No serious PDA(public display of affection)s here, please. Ergo, the rules I suggested regarding the contest.
Not to say I disagree with what you're saying. If we choose to be that way, I do believe we are completely within our rights. However, I like to think we are a little more benevolent than that, and are willing to seek compromise.
Compromise, something I feel is in the spirit of Mega Man, X specifically. "There is no world just for Reploids," so we may as well just try and get along.

I'm not mad at you, nor'm I accusing you of being a ZOMGHOMOPHOBE. I'm just whining about wheedly yaoifen fancying themselves queer advocates when they'd probably die of shock if they saw two actual guys dryhumping. XD

Date: 2005-01-17 08:37 pm (UTC)Now. Let us draw a picture with our imaginary paint brushes. A happy colourful picture. Let us draw Axl giving a valentine to X. :D Yes. Look at them. X looks at the valentine and he smiles a BIG smile. Do you see it? You're smiling too! :D All is happy and merry. X and Axl begin skipping because of their glee. They skip through a field of happy flowers. There are butterflies, fluttering about, hovering on the sweet light wind.
Now. Ask yourself one question. WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!? Keep your fantasies to yourself. The moderators don't want to see it, so go to a yaoi board. If you find this unfair, throw yourself in front of a moving bus, because this is life, and if you don't like it, that's your answer. The X series is about blood, war and other REALISTIC things. Not X GETTING VALENTINES FROM AXL. Seriously. Grow up you pathetic child.

Date: 2005-01-17 09:50 pm (UTC)MMN is run in such a way that it attempts to put forth an unbiased and informative news service for people of all age groups, creed, orientation, etc. The best stance is always to "keep it clean". Its not homophobia, its tact and candor. There is a place for everything, and clearly a news service's forums is not the place for that type of media to be displayed, advertised or even allowed in the first place.
There's my 2 cents, of course. I had omitted it from Red's journal yesterday, for fear that I was the onyl person thinking of the reprocussions of what could have happened.
I'd be lieing if i didn't say that's disturbing.

But dude...seriously, that pic, even for me, is just right out! they don't even LOOK remotly human. YOu twisted lil' thing. good work. ^_^
and by the by, i know it's common practice for girls to give V-day stuff to girls but what about guys? I could have sworn it's not a common thing. At least not in Scottsdale, AZ.
